Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?
We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist  –  that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.

At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.
In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

DID  YOU  KNOW

download.png - logov   29282489b23fb816e0de86f9eb824254.jpg - ab logo       THAT The following are a few test match facts:  The All Blacks have played 28 Tests against Ireland since 1905 for a record of 22 wins, 5 losses and one draw.   Ireland’s first win over the All Blacks came on neutral soil during a 40-29 win in Chicago in 2016.    The teams have played in Dublin 19 times and six times at Aviva Stadium since their first meeting at the new venue in 2010.    Aviva Stadium holds 52,000 fans and was built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road ground where the sides met on 17 occasions, including their first match in 1905.

IRISH LOGIC ~ “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures.

HERE and THERE . . .

Celebrating 29 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .

WHEN . . . Joseph-Aukoso Suaalii took the field this morning against England he became the 17th new Wallaby coach Joe Schmidt has used in 2024.  This is the most debutant players used since 1928.  The 21-year-old former Sydney Roosters NRL star Suaalii picked up the Player of the Match award in the Wallabies last gasp 42-37 victory at Twickenham.  This was their first victory here against England since 2015.

IN ALL MY . . . years being involved in athletics I’d never heard of the term “Banditing” until this week.  It seems quite rife with an estimated 200 doing it in last weekend’s New York Marathon.  It’s where a competitor uses a race bib from a previous event or uses someone else’s race bib. American runner Alberto Pera found himself in the spotlight on Reddit after he was spotted crossing the finish line of the 2024 New York City Marathon wearing a bib from a different race.  The 44-year-old sported a bib from the 2024 New Jersey City Marathon which he’d back in April. One of the main reasons for people going to the extreme of “Banditing” is the exorbitant cost of race entry fees.  The New York City Marathon which attracted 55,000 entrants this year costs $US400 to enter.

THE . . . Hurricanes vs Fijian Drua on 22nd April next year will be the 17th Super Rugby game played a McLean Park.  It’ll be the first at the venue since the Canes played the Western Force back in 2021.  The Canes have won 10 of their 13 games played at McLean Park.  The Crusaders won two as the home side in 2011-2012 seasons.  The Fijian Drua will be the 11th different Super Rugby side to play in Napier.

BACK TO . . . the US for this billboard spotted in a place called Indian Hills.  “Ban re-shredded cheese, make America grate again.”

THAT  A Flashback to the glorious ‘sixties’ from our club cartoonist Mike Richardson, currently on holiday in Australia as he reminisces on ‘back in those days’ of the former Napier Marist Club.  Sadly our mates Joe and Russell  have now passed on but they will still remain foremost in our minds and remembered as great guys,  team mates and friends,  and of the great times and games we’ve had together.  It’s what a Clubs are and can be all about…..

cid:image050.png@01DB3107.43814900

‘Ask not what your Club can do for you.  But what you can do for your Club…’

THAT  It was an interesting interview with veteran commentator Grant Nisbett yesterday morning following the  test v Ireland and the messages from a string of All Black players, coaches and media personalities recognising his 350 test match commentary’s over the years.  Grant has now commentated on more the half the 649 tests that the All Blacks have played over the years both in New Zealand and internationally.
Incidently Grant was the invited guest speaker at the former Napier High School Old Boys Rugby Club’s reunion that was held in the clubrooms earlier in the year courtesy of being an acquaintance of member Bill Heap.

THAT former Wallaby winger and personality David Campese just can’t help himself with not sounding off about the game today and the things that nark him.  Here is just another snippet of his latest niggle….

And then there’s [head coach]  Joe Schmidt.  He has no idea about Australian rugby.   And he’s a New Zealander He’s not interested in finding out who we are.  We used to counter-attack or, at least, attack from the opposition 22.  Now, we maul from the 22.  That’s not Australian rugby.  We used to attack!   In Australia, we need to entertain to get people to watch.

I’m not saying he’s a bad coach, but why do we have to have a New Zealand coach?   We’re not New Zealanders.  No one has ever coached a foreign team to a Rugby World Cup victory.  Eddie Jones was an assistant coach with South Africa in 2007 but look around the world now and most sides have native coaches.”

Actually ‘Campo’ we’re sure your fellow Wallaby supporters wouldn’t be complaining about their teams 42-37 winning result on the road against England at Twickenham overnight…….. Ed

THAT  If  YOU wish to take the opportunity and want to have family members, relations or friends receive a copy of our regular TeamTalk newsletters just forward their name & email addresses to –  eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz

THAT  As usual we apologise for any errors or mistakes you may find in this edition.     Ed.

THEY SAID IT

“I try not to get stuck into referees…..it must be one of the hardest games to adjudicate on.  So, I try to stay away from that.”
Grant Nisbett

“Tony Ward is the most important rugby player in Ireland. His legs are far more important to his country than even those of Marlene Dietrich were to the film industry. A little hairier, maybe, but a pair of absolute winners.”
– C.M.H. Gibson, Wales v Ireland match programme (1979).

“I’m 49, I’ve had a brain haemorrhage and a triple bypass and I could still go out and play a reasonable game of rugby union. But I wouldn’t last 30 seconds in rugby league.”
– Graham Lowe (1995).

“We know Ireland will be fizzing, the crowd, but I don’t thinks the boys will be worried about that stuff to much.”

Promoted All Black hooker Asafo Aumua.

“Yeah, it’s a real honour to be named starting.  I’m just really excited.  I got a good taste of it last week…..I can still feel that today, but it’ll be even better as the week goes on.”

Asafo Aumua can’t wait to hit the ground running at Aviva Stadium.

“The way Eddie treated his coaching staff was horrific.  It was unreasonable, obnoxious, unfair.  People lived in fear.  There probably wasn’t a day when I wouldn’t think about punching him.”
A former England rugby employee on head coach Eddie Jones PR or lack of them skills with his staff.

WEEKENDS RESULTS UPDATE…

PREMIER CRICKET

The Station NOBM Premiers were beaten by Taradake by 73 runs.
Bowling first, we started well with two early wickets to Ethan Madden. This turned into 5/88 after 26 overs. Some late partnerships for Taradale got them to a total of 247/8 after 50 overs. Best of the bowlers was Josh Paerau with 2/44 from 10 overs.
In reply, a blistering innings of 55 from 41 balls from PJ Singh got us off to great start and we were 1/102 after 16 overs. We then lost regular wickets and were eventually bowled out for 174 in 34 overs. Along with PJ’s innings, Karan Param continued his fine batting form this season with 60 from 84 balls.

DIVISION 2 AND 3 RESULTS:

Division 2a

The NOBM Eagles beat Marewa by 4 Wickets.
Marewa batted first and score 114 all out in 21 overs.
Best of the Eagles bowlers were Jaggi Singh with 4/38.
In reply, the Eagles got to the target with 4 wickets in hand after 21 overs. Best of the batters were Jagdeep Singh with 41* from 52 balls and Tajinder Singh with 24 from 38 balls.

Division 2b
The Sideline Bar NOBM Hobblers lost to St John’s First X1 by 9 wickets.
We won the toss and batted first. After a positive start we lost wickets a little too regular and ended up scoring 154 all out in 34 overs. Best of the batters was Danile Evans with 28 from 38 balls, while others made starts.
In reply, bowling was economical in the first 20 overs to have St John’s at 1/66. They were able to score faster though in the second half of the innings to get to 158/1 after 34 overs. Reid McGrath picked up our only wicket (1/39) while Scott Morgan was economical in his 8 overs, going for just 17 runs.

Division 3
The Downey’s Butchery NOBM Sausages
lost to NBHS 3rd X1 by 1 wicket.
Batting first the Sausages scored 168 all out in 29 overs. Best of the batters was Troy Reihana with a run-a-ball 31.
In reply, NBHS got to the target in the 29th over at 9 wickets down in a tight match. Best of the bowlers was James McCorkindale with 2/24 from 6 overs.

The Leprauchan Comments

A Catholic priest, a Protestant minister, and a Jewish rabbi were discussing when life begins.
“Life begins,” said the priest, “at the moment of fertilization. That is when God instills the spark of life into the fetus.”
“We believe,” said the minister, “that life begins at birth, because that is when the baby becomes an individual and is capable of making its own decisions and must learn about sin.”
“You’re both wrong,” said the rabbi. “Life begins when the children have graduated and moved out of the house.”

Old Sean O’Farrell was reminiscing about the good old days.
“When I was a boy, my mother would send me with $1.00 to the corner store. I’d come back with 5 potatoes, 2 loaves of bread, 3 bottles of milk, a hunk of cheese, a box of tea and a dozen eggs.
You just can’t do that today…too many security cameras.”

Clancy was invited to Doolan’s home for dinner. Doolan proceeded every request to his wife by endearing terms, calling her honey, my love, darling, sweetheart, pumpkin, etc.
Clancy was impressed since the couple had been married almost 70 years, so while Mrs. Doolan was off in the kitchen he said to Doolan; “I think that it is wonderful that after all these years you’ve been together, you still call your wife pet names.”
Doolan hung his head. “To tell you the truth”, he said, “I forgot her name about 10 years ago”.
