NASH CUP

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST PREMIERS  36 – 33  TECHNICAL PREMIERS

Last round of the Nash and a good test of character.   A great tough battle which is exactly what the next round will be like.   Great sunny Saturday weather for footy led to Tech taking a good first half lead with numerous line breaks and ill-discipline from the team.

Standouts from our guys included Reilly Hannon and Oto Katoa who showed their experience .

Credit to the bench impact and the team figuring out how to get themselves out of trouble which saw line breaks from vice captain Kere Penitito which flared the comeback and some quality finishes.   The back of the lineout was quality in the second half which provided the conductor Ellery room to play which ultimately led to him 150th celebration being a success.    Maddison round in bound and it’s going to be a nail bitter each week

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST PREMIER RESERVE  65 – 26   TECHNICAL PREMIER RESERVES

Our Richard Kepka Premier Reserve squad delivered a dominant performance this weekend, securing an impressive 62-26 victory on Napier Technical.   The team set the tone early, running in string of tries in the first half through Ioane Lauano,  Faafetai Filipo,  Tunufa’i Pelenato,  Pili Maisa, and Manasa Kabuabola.  Their cohesion and attacking intent put Napier Technical under constant pressure and established a strong lead heading into the break.

The momentum carried into the second half, with Siaosi Aiolupo,  Paul Mauga,  Junior Togomai,  and Talosaga Eteuati crossing the line.   Eteuati was outstanding completing a hat-trick and capping off a powerful team effort.   Despite the strong result, the win was overshadowed by an unfortunate moment in the second half.   Vince Bo, our valued number 4, suffered a season-ending  injury.   Vince is a huge part of our squad, and our thoughts are with him and his family during this time.  We know he’ll have a full support of the team behind him as he begins his recovery.

A great result on the scoreboard, and  a performance the team can be proud of, but one that also reminds us of the importance of looking after one and other both on and off the field.

MAURY COADY CUP

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST THIRDS  31 – 0  TARADALE THIRDS

Napier Old Boys Marist Thirds travelled to Taradale this weekend, fully aware they were in for a tough contest, and that’s exactly how it played out.   NOBM started strongly, striking first and controlling the opening 20 minutes with confidence and structure.   However, a couple of lapses in concentration allowed Taradale back into the game, conceding two quick tries to swing momentum.

To their credit, the lads regrouped well and fought their way back into the match. The second half saw NOBM take control again, spending long periods ahead on the scoreboard and applying consistent pressure, holding a narrow lead for much of the half.    Unfortunately, another structural lapse late in the game opened the door for Taradale to edge back in front. Despite this, NOBM finished strongly, camping on the Taradale line and throwing everything they had at the defence.   The effort was there, but they were unable to quite execute the final play to seal it.

The final score saw Taradale take it 35–31 in a tight, hard-fought battle.   While the result didn’t go their way, the team continues to improve each week, taking valuable lessons from another competitive performance.   The lads are back at home next weekend against Takapau, get along and show your support.

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST COLTS  28 – 43  TARADALE COLTS

Top of the table clash this week against Taradale, with the winner going a long way toward securing a 1st round home final.   We had a few disruptions during the week with boys unavailable, injured, or away, but we didn’t let that affect this group.  Training was strong all week and the boys turned up Saturday ready to go.   Unfortunately from kickoff Taradale put us under pressure, and it felt like we were always chasing the game.  To the boys’ credit, they worked hard to keep fighting their way back into the contest throughout the first half.

At halftime the message was clear — we knew what we needed to do to get on top. But a few mistakes, combined with not quite executing our set pieces and the basics of the game, allowed Taradale to get the better of us. Taradale took the win 43–28.   The talk in the shed after the game was honest — we didn’t feel Taradale were the better team, but we lost because we simply didn’t want it enough on the day.

Next week we take on Pirates, and with a win there we will earn another crack at Taradale in the 1st round final.

DID  YOU  KNOW

THAT  huge congratulations to our 2026 Nash Cup Champions  Benson Property Limited NOBM Premiers who secured the Nash Cup with their win over Taradale last week.   This is the first time since 2018 the club has lifted the trophy, adding to previous wins this century in 2002, 2016, and 2017.    Massive credit to Ellery, Matt, their management team, and the entire playing squad for an outstanding campaign.

NOBM’s win last week ends a run of 14 consecutive losses to Taradale.   The last win over Taradale was 34-29 in 2019 Maddison Trophy final.   The 70 points posted last week was the third highest total NOBM has ever posted against Taradale –  2018 : W 89-17,   2017 : W 78-9,    2026 : W 70-12,    2018 : W 67-18,     2011 : W 66-5.   (Info credited to HB Rugby statistician Adrian Hill)

THAT Congratulations also to our Premier coach and sometime player Ellery Wilson who yesterday played his 150th game for Napier OBM Premiers.  Ellery who manages the Hawkes Bay Rugby academy has been a real Trojan in the clubs colours for more than a decade and has also played 29 games for Hawkes Bay 2014-2017, scoring two tries – v North Harbour 2014 and Otago 2017.

THAT we extend congratulations to our NOBM players named in the Hawkes Bay XV vs Manawatu encounter for the annual ‘battle of the ranges’ that was played in Waipukurau during the past week:  Kere Penitito,  Kane Ngawhare,  Patrick Teddy,  Jonty Stewart,  Dylan Homan  and Lachlan Varcoe.  The match saw the Magpies XV take out the game with a  55–31 winning result.

THAT  Special Message to all of our Members and Supporters –  It is   IMPORTANT  THAT  YOU  LEND  YOUR  SUPPORT  TO  OUR  MAJOR RAFFLE   which we are co-sharing with our affiliate Napier Marist Cricket  –  Football   and  ExHigh Marist Netball  clubs.   This  is a collective fundraiser toward future development of our club facilities.  Individually we may struggle but collectively we can achieve what needs to be done over the next couple of years.  Your turn to lend your Support folks….

DON’T  FORGET  to  Hook  In  and  get  yourself  and  your mate  a  Ticket TODAY……

If it’s drowning you’re after, don’t torment yourself with shallow water.

THAT our top NOBM points accumulators Jonty Stewart is now on 101,  Michael Beech 13 tries – 65 points,  Jedidah Corbett 5 tries – 25 points.  All with the support of their ‘green machine’ team mates.

THAT the passing of Dennis Smart last week.  Educated at Napier BHS, he was an occasional fullback for the Napier HSOB senior team 1960-61 and served as Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union as Secretary 1980-90.  Dennis was the first President of the Hawke’s Bay-Gisborne District Squash Rackets Association when it formed in 1971 and continued through in this capacity to 1975, then served as its Secretary in 1977.  This enabled him to serve on the NZ Squash Rackets Association Management Committee 1971-1976.

THAT   re  WE’RE LOOKING FOR MATCHDAY VOLUNTEERS    A suggestion to members  these roles do not necessarily have to done by one person, maybe these important positions could be shared between two or three  club members  –  sort of  ‘share the load’.    Give this some serious through guys and girls  >>> YOUR SUPPORT WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED.  Contact Wade if YOU or you know of someone who may be interested in taking on one of these important roles.  Your Support will really be Appreciated.

THAT did you know that is an ‘Ellery’  Fan Club developing amongst our younger brigade.  It was certainly a great way to celebrate his 150th Napier Old Boys Marist Premier game…

THAT do you know someone missing these newsletters ?   If you know someone that would like to receive our Napier Old Boys Marist weekly newsletters,  please forward this email on to them  –  to forward their address to   –   eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz          We know there are supporters out there who will have changed their address.

THAT  As usual we apologise for any errors or mistakes you may find in this edition.     Ed.

THEY SAID IT

“Yeah, it was hot, especially a mid-day game.  Bit of a greenhouse, but nah, awesome stadium.  Almost as good as Forsyth Barr.”
Highlanders skipper Ethan De Groot sums Christchurch’s new Te Kaha stadium after his side ground out a 27-17 win over Moana Pasifika.

“It’s got a different feel to Forsyth Barr, almost like a European stadium, not much airflow, quite humid and the ball gets a bit more slippery.”
Hurricanes Jordie Barrett.

“I take a laid-back approach to a lot of things in life and, at the end of the day, rugby’s just a game.”
Beauden Barrett.

“You’ve got to get your first tackle in early, even if it’s late.”
Ray Graved.

“The best way to keep a lead is to increase it.”
John Eales.

The Leprauchan Comments

An Englishman, Scotsman, and yer man Paddy were boasting about how famous their uncles are. “My uncle is a bishop,” said the Englishman, “and when he walks down the street, everybody says, ‘Your Lordship.”
“My uncle is a cardinal,” said the Scotsman, “and when he walks down the street everybody says, ‘Your Eminence.”
“Dat’s nothing,” says Paddy. “My uncle weighs twenty-nine stone, and when he walks down the street everybody says, ‘God Almighty!’

Paddy returned home to Ireland from watching a rugby match between Ireland and England. At the pub, Paddy told the lads, “It was a savage competition, nothing short of brutal. In the break, the Irish skipper came off the field with a bruised testicle!”
Mick said,“He must have been in agony.”
“Not at all,” replied Paddy. “It belonged to one of the Englishmen.”

Paddy says to Mick “Have you heard the news ?
3 cliff walkers have fallen to their deaths!”
“Unbelievable, says Mick, I can’t believe they all had the same name!”
