NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST PREMIERS  31 – 24  TECHNICAL PREMIERS

Away to NTOB this week and a welcome return of numerous players , mostly on restricted return to play minutes but certainly great to reintroduce as we build into the Maddison competition.    Physical is the best word to describe both teams and both sides of the ball in this recent match.  Our starters took a lot of pressure and there was some big collisions but pleasing to see our reserves come on and add in this space.

In game, we had the FRC ( front row crew) turn it on against well regarded opponents, although they didn’t get rewarded everytime for their efforts it certainly was pleasing to witness the fantastic platforms created.    Kades accuracy and game awareness certainly got us out of a few predicaments but bloody brilliant to see him back on the field.     Kane Ngwhare’s all round game efforts from defence sets to his aerial skills saw him claim our 3 points followed closely by Connor Cashman who filled gaps and turned up on attack continuously and considering this was only his second appearance after a lengthy sideline injury it’s safe to say he has added on his return.

The 1 point went to Pickkles (sometimes known as Reilly Hannon) for his outstanding energy he created for the team after the huge 50minutes before him to see guys come on and lift the game like this is brilliant.   We certainly have strengths and still areas to refine  the post game catch ups in Maddison round 2

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST THIRDS  34 – 17  FLAXMERE THIRDS

NOBM Thirds made the trip across to Flaxmere on Saturday, coming in hot after last week’s win and looking to keep the momentum rolling.   NOBM struck first, but the Flaxmere answered back quickly,  leaning on their big rumbling forward pack to muscle their way back into the contest.   Despite the physical battle up front, NOBM kept chipping away and building pressure, heading into the sheds at halftime with a deserved 17–10 lead.

The second half brought its challenges, with two big injuries taking some punch out of the forward pack.  Credit to the bench though, who stepped up in a massive way and matched Flaxmere’s aggression and physicality without taking a backwards step, frustrating the Home side into mistakes.    As the game wore on things got a bit scrappy, but the lads kept their composure and refused to stoop to Flaxmere’s level.   Special mention to Sam Wattie, who channelled his inner Muhammad Ali by bobbing and weaving around punches being thrown his way,  and somehow managing not to throw any back, which may well be a first.

Jeremy Irvine put the game beyond doubt with a second-half hat trick,  helping NOBM close things out with a hard-earned 34–17 win.   There’ll be a few sore bodies this week after 80 minutes on a field that looked like it hadn’t seen water in years, but the boys will recover quickly with another physical encounter looming next week away at Tamatea.   After Saturday’s effort though, the lads will be more than ready.

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST COLTS  35 – 31  TARADALE COLTS

After Thursday night training we named the strongest team possible.  Then Saturday morning came and a few of our game breakers became unavailable due to work and family commitments.   I’ll admit it put me in a negative headspace for a while, but a few words from my wife got me focused back on the job ahead.   The pre-game message was simple — start strong and put Taradale on the back foot.   That’s exactly what we did, scoring early and creating pressure.  Unfortunately after that we suffered three major injuries, with all three boys ending up at hospital.   Our thoughts are with Luke, Maddox and Brock.  It looks like we may have lost Luke and Maddox for the season.

That forced some big decisions around who would come on and help see out the next 60–70 minutes.  It left us short on the bench, but credit to this group of boys — they never let the distractions affect them.   At halftime we held a 21–14 lead.    The halftime talk was about building scoreboard pressure and taking points whenever they were on offer.

The second half started with Taradale attacking hard, but a brilliant intercept saw us score under the posts.   Again, the message went out to take the points, but the boys had different ideas.    The final 10 minutes aged me a few years.   We were up by four points and Taradale camped inside our 22m, hammering away at our line.    It felt like we just couldn’t clear ourselves out of trouble, but the boys showed unbelievable courage, determination and grit to keep them out.

We did it — 34–31 winners   The boys enjoyed celebrating together afterwards, but we know the job is only half done. Second round starts next week and we need to keep this momentum rolling.

FORWARDS WIN GAMES…….BACKS DECIDE BY HOW MUCH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DID  YOU  KNOW
THAT  Our clubmembers join in CONGRATULATING our Napier Collision Repair Colts team who yesterday took out the Arthur Brown Cup Championship title for 2026 with their close  35 – 31 win over the maroons from Taradale.   A great effort guys.  And we hope your injured men can get back into the action soon.  Our Club are proud of you all…..
THAT Here’s a
cid:image023.jpg@01DCE158.3BA3BB70FORTY YEARS AGO….1986
The Masterton Marist hosted Spillane Tournament at Easter saw Napier account for  Morrinsville St Josephs 17-10 and in Ham Cumming Cup final Palmerston North Marist 13-9 to win the right to next years Spillane Cup division at the Gisborne hosted tournament in 1987.
Life Member Frank Mahony attended his 50th consecutive Marist RFC annual meeting.   While our McLean Park neighbours Colenso Pirates RFC celebrated their centenary.   The Napier Marist President for 1986 was Ian MacRae, while vice President Joe Kelly offered his services to take on the role as the club’s first manager (part time) for the year.
On the domestic rugby front the inter-city committee showed the foresight to play-off a round of games under the McLean Park lights during the milder autumn months.   And to eleviate the chance of closed grounds at McLean Park at times, the club installed new training lights at Whitmore Park as a back-up for the often unavailability of McLean Park.   This project was due to the efforts of Pat Horgan, Tim Seed and friends who handled the lighting installation.   Plans toward a move to Park Island in the future were shelved indefinitely partly due to the added costs and conditions from the NCC.
A brutal Maddison Trophy match against MAC saw the ordering-off and sin-binnings and the game called off early meted out by referee Bill Sinclair.  The scoreboard should have read – O’Shaughnessy 21 – MAC 7.   Yes Peter O’Shaughnessy slotted penalties sums it up   A distasteful exhibition of rugby if that’s what its called.   As well chairman Ken Simons public threat to withdraw Marist teams from any future matches with the MAC club hit the headlines in the local press and also on TVNZ’s Maori News programme.   It also brought immediate action from the HBRU to settle the situation down.   The Marist senior team went on the take out back to back (1985-86) Maddison Trophy titles – winning 10 of their 11 games this year.    The 1986 Madison Final was played off between Napier High School Old Boys and Napier Marist which resulted in a 25 -10 winning result to Marist.
Due to a surplus of players throughout the Senior 1, 2 and 4 grades an additional Senior 4 team was entered after the season kicked-off this move also elevated the bye in the senior 4 competition.   This additional side was known as the ‘Marist Cavaliers’ after the recent rebel side that toured South Africa and was coached by Mark O’Dowd.    The teams inaugural match saw them cleanout Tech 4’s by 31-13.  And while the side performed with distinction, obviously due to the calibre of some of the former senior 1st players in the side the likes of former magpies Fred Harbottle and John van der Linden,  it struggled for numbers later in the season as the other sides lost players through injury etc.    The Cavaliers became the ‘spare parts’ XV for the their fellow Marist teams and teammates.  It has been a real bonus to be able to field a fifth team in our senior club in 1986.
And for the first time the club even managed to put together a Womens team under the tutorage of Herb Hamilton, and Peter Greene.   Of the three games they participated in, training was the biggest bugbear, but they managed to turn up for three games resulting in 1 draw and two losses.  At least they gave it a go…
On the Marist schoolboys front, it was a real thrill to have a former Napier Marist schoolboy player in current All Black fullback spend a couple of hours watching and assisting the Marist boys preparing and playing their Saturday morning games.
The clubs incoming Skerries exchange player was midfielder Derek O’Leary who arrived back with the returning Kevin Corkery.   Senior lock Herb Hamilton was the club’s outgoing Skerries exchange representative.    And former Irish lock who had the season with our Napier Marist club in 1983, Mick Moylett, has since been selected to play for Ireland.
The NZ Marist Colts rep on the 1986 North Island tour was Todd Donaldson.   The Brother Virgilius Cup was won by Marist 17-6 in the annual fixture with Napier HSOB.   The club trophies for 1968 were presented by former All Black Mark Shaw who was a guest at the Annual Dinner.   The 1986 Napier Marist Sportsman of the Year was successful Premier coach – Graham Weber.
HERE and THERE . . .
Celebrating 30 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .
THE FIRST . . . round of the 2026 Maddison Trophy produced 44 tries, 27 conversions and just one penalty goal.   There was 41 individual point scorers across the four matches played.
HOW . . . many readers remember skimming stones across the water?   The first NZ Stone Skimming Championships are being held this weekend at Lake Hawea in the South Island.
New Zealand’s record stands at 54.5 metres.   The world record is 121.8 metres, set by Scotsman Dougie Isaacs in 2018.   The women’s record is 52.5 metres, while the world record for most consecutive skips is 88, set by Kurt Steiner of Pennsylvania in 2013.
WHEN IT . . . came to handing out nicknames, my old Venables, Willis workmate Jack Terry Quinn and I were pretty good at it.
My efforts were during my seven-year stint as the editor of the Napier Harriers Hotline magazine where I ended up writing most of the race reports.   So hence quite a few club members got nicknames that are still around like Craig Forest Mathers, Mark Sparky Speakman and Fraser Frootloop Marett to name a few.
That got me thinking about the new covered One Stadium in Christchurch.   Wellington has the Cake Tin, so Christchurch surely deserves the Bread Bin.
THERE’S . . . been a mixed response by women to use of smaller sized balls for this season’s version of Super Rugby Aupiki.   Most are in favour of the smaller size 4.5 ball saying it’s way easier to pass and kick.   The size 5 ball has been standard issue for players of all sexes since day dot.   So if it improves the female game more let’s stick to the smaller balls.
THAT’S A WRAP. . . for this week.  Next week – the Hurricanes Charity Anzac Day jersey auction update.
 Cheers McGoo – mcgooz@outlook.com
The Leprauchan Comments
The Golden Telephone
On holiday in Europe, Bert noticed a marble column in a church in Rome with a golden telephone on it.
As a young priest passed by, Bert asked who the  telephone was for. The priest told him it was a direct line to Heaven, and  if he’d like to call, it would be a thousand dollars.
Bert was amazed, but declined the offer.
Throughout Europe, Bert kept seeing the same golden telephone on a marble  column. At each, he asked about it and the answer was always the same: a  direct line to Heaven and he could call for a thousand dollars.
After Bert finished his tour in Ireland, he decided to attend Mass at a local village church. When he walked in the door he noticed the golden telephone, but underneath it there was a sign stating:
DIRECT LINE TO HEAVEN – 25 CENTS!
‘Father,‘ he said, “I have been all over Europe and in all the great cathedrals I visited, I’ve seen telephones exactly like this one but the price is always a thousand dollars. Why is it that this one is only 25 cents?”
The priest smiled and said, “Son, you’re in Ireland, it’s a local call!”
Paddy Murphy approached Mulligan’s Bar when he was suddenly accosted outside by Sister Marie.
“Surely a fine man as yerself, Paddy, is not going in to this den of iniquity?!” the good sister asked, more as an order than a question. “Surely you wouldn’t waste yer hard-earned paycheck on the devil’s brew when you could be buying food and clothing fer yer family!”
“Now hold on there, sister!” sputtered Murphy. “Surely you won’t be condemnin’ whiskey without ever tasting some yerself, would ya?”
Very well then” said Sister Marie, “Just to prove my point, I’ll try some. Obviously I can’t go into the pub, but you go in and bring it out to me. Just have them place it in a cup rather than a glass, so as to not create a scandal out here.”
Okay sister” said Murphy as he happily breezed on in to Mulligan’s.
“I’ll have a large gin” ordered Murphy to the barman, “and place it in a cup, not a glass!”
The barman shook his head and replied “Don’t tell me that nun’s outside again
A Irishman, Mick goes to the doctor complaining of stomach pain…
Doctor: “Well I can’t find anything wrong with you , it must be the drinking”
Mick : “I’ll come back when you’re sober Doctor”
