“Team up with a Winning Club in 2024

Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?
We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.
At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.
In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

DID YOU KNOW

THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of  –  be they family, friends or workmates.     In 2024 we will have vacancies in all grades from  Colts  through to  Premiers  so remember   –   New Players will always be Welcome at Napier Old Boys Marist

THAT yesterday turned out to be better than expected especially on the rugby front with the All Blacks back on their game against Italy with their 97-17 walloping win in France.  And then the afternoon turned out to be even better especially if you’re a Hawkes Bay supporter as they eventually overcame the Wellington Lions in a really tight game winning  20-18 in the final round.   Not only did the Magpies they keep their competition chances alive, they also won back the coveted Ranfurly Shield which they lost to the Lions at the end of last season.  Well done guys….

THAT  we have pleasure in bringing THAT yesterday turned out to be better than expected especially on the rugby front with the All Blacks back on their game against Italy with their 97-17 win in France.  And then the afternoon turned out to be even better if you’re a Hawkes Bay supporter as they eventually overcame the Wellington Lions  in a really tight game winning  20-18 in the final round.

And not only did the Magpies they keep their competition chances alive, they also won back the coveted Ranfurly Shield which they lost to the Lions at the end of last season.  Well done guys….

THAT this photo/artwork creation below from our cartoonist Mike Richardson who produced this birthday tribute for owner of Shed 2 on the quay in Ahuriri, Dennis Buckley on the occasion of his 80th Birthday last week.  Dennis who has been a staunch Marist member throughout his lifetime both as a top goalkicking fullback for the clubs Premier team of his time, whom former Premier hooker Mike played alongside in the early – mid sixties.

Dennis has and has also always has been an enthusiastic tennis player during his off field and off work times and he has often followed his passion by attending the Australian Open in Melbourne in January over the years.   Dennis has been the long term licensee of   Shed 2  and continues his support of our rugby club over the years as a generous sponsor as well as supporting our Marist Netball Club.  And to this end we wish him well for the next eighty……

HERE and THERE . . .

Celebrating 28 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .

HUGE . . . congratulations to the Hawke’s Bay Magpies for winning the Ranfurly Shield 20-18 off the Wellington Lions yesterday.  This was the Magpies fourth successful challenge for the Log o’ Wood in the since 2013, having won it off Otago twice and Counties Manukau once. It’s also the seventh time the Hawke’s Bay Magpies have officially lifted the Ranfurly Shield in their 139-year history.  There was of course the Wattie Barclay residential breach controversy in 1927, whereby we beat Wairarapa on the field 21-10 in what became known as The Battle of Solway!  But forfeited the Shield because Barclay hadn’t fulfilled the residential qualification of the day when the match was played.

WITH THE. . . round-robin matches completed here’s a Hawke’s Bay Magpies stats update. In winning seven of the 10 games the Hawke’s Bay Magpies scored 42 tries, 32 conversions and 10 penalties. The opposition have scored 35 tries, 20 conversions and 12 penalties.  First-five Lincoln McClutchie is the leading scorer with 103 points.  Top try scorers are Brad Weber and Ollie Sapsford with 5 each.  The Magpies backs have scored 21 tries, the forwards 20 each and there’s been one penalty try.  The outside backs scored 9 tries, inside backs 8 and the midfield 4.  Of the forwards tries the Loosies scored 11 and Tighties 9.

NEXT WEEK . . . some old rugby bits and pieces found lurking in the back of my garage.

Cheers McGoo

THEY SAID IT

“”We’ve had some games with them in the past on tour, and this year in the Six Nations they pushed every team, and last year they won some critical games.  They’ve evolved their attack from what I can see.  They had the fastest ball available in the Six  Nations – that’s better than Ireland – and that’s quick.  They know their game, and they’re playing well.
All Blacks defence coach Scott McLeod on the capabilities of the Italians XV.

“I’d like to apologise to all Australians supporters, our performance wasn’t up to the standard required, and I take full responsibility for it.”

Eddie Jones explains following being humbled 40-6 by Warren Gatland Wales after the earlier 22-15 loss to Fiji. ……… “I came back to Australia to help.  At the moment I’m not much help, am I?  But that doesn’t mean my commitment to help has changed.  I’m a proud Australian.    I hate to see Australian rugby do as poorly as we’ve been doing.”

“The Eddie Jones experiment can be declared a disaster after the Wallabies all but crashed out of the World Cup in record-breaking fashion.”

Sydney Morning Herald’s Tom Decent.

“Given it’s a must win, they’re definitely a massive threat. Since coach Kieran Crowley has been involved they’re the best Italian side I’ve seen.”
Codie Taylor, All Black hooker.

The Leprauchan Comments

Murphy lost a hundred dollars on the Melbourne Cup, a famous
Australian horserace.  He also lost another hundred on the television
replay.

An Irish labourer was living in London and had lost his job, skint broke and fecking hungry he decides on a plan to get a few drinks and a decent meal.

Putting on his one and only “going to mass on a Sunday” suit he goes into a big firm of solicitors and asks to make a will.

“I’d like to leave the farm back home in Ireland to the eldest son,” he says, then continues,” and I’d like to leave the other farm, slightly smaller, just the three hundred acres to the second son. And I’d like to leave the two hotels in Ballybunion to the two daughters and…”

The solicitor thinking he was onto a good earner interrupts and says “Look why don’t I take you out to lunch and then we can come back to the office and tidy up the paperwork.”

“Fair enough so,” says Paddy and off they went to a classy restaurant where the solicitor treats Paddy to a slap up meal and copious pints of lager.

Later when they return to the office Paddy continues, ” I’d like to leave the factory in Listowel to the brother and the shares in Apple to the cousin and…”

“Hold on a minute,” says the solicitor beginning at last to cop-on. “Are you sure you actually have all this property?” He asks.

“Shur, not a bit of it.” Answers Paddy but if I had that’s who I’d like to leave it to!”

“Get out!” says the solicitor as Paddy runs for the door.

“Father, I have just shot down two British lieutenants and I knocked off a British captain,” O’Donnell said in one breath.

“Father, are you listening? Father, have you fainted?”

“Of course I haven’t fainted, son,” the priest replied. “I am waiting for you to stop talking about politics and start confessing your sins.”

We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  –  Pop in for cool Tui or two  – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.    All members and friends Welcome …………. Ed
