“Team up with a winning Club in 2021”

Primed and Ready to Go
again in 2021

Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?

We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.

At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.

In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The principle is competing against yourself.  It’s about self-improvement,
about being better than you were the day before.
90th annual Spillane Tournament  –  Taupo
Congratulations to Napier OBM players elected in the 2021 Tournament XV
Michael Buckley  &  Ricky Hayes
Spillane Final
(Sunday)
Hastings R&S 29 – 31 Napier OBM
An enthralling game that’s for sure and down 29 – 7 after 43 mins I gave us no chance of coming back.  Will never underestimate the team again.
Total team performance in the second half and the young guys did really well, in particular Paul Lapa, Pulea Faleiva and Jonty Stewart, but it was the evergreen and seemingly indestructible Pouvi Fatialofa who came on at half time and really brought the energy which started the resurgence. The guy was as stiff as a board Sunday morning after a massive game on the Saturday but still stripped and ripped into it to help get us home. Simply unbelievable.
Scoring – 13min – HRS try  –  0-5 ;  23m –  James Holbrook try/con Jonty Stewart – 7-5 ;  29m – HRS try –  7-10 ;  36m – HRS try –  7-17 ;  40m – HRS try –  7-24   ///   47m –  7-29 ;  55m – Paul Lapa try/con – Stewart –  14-29 ;  56m – Lapa try/con – Stewart –  21-29 ;  65m – Boris Van Bruchem try/con Stewart – 28-29 ; 77m – Stewart penalty –   31-29
Sat 20 March – NOBM Premier Reserves  pre-season Opener
vs  Bridge Pa XV
@ Tremain Field @ 11am
Our one and only pre-season hit out before the season starts on Easter Friday.  Newcomers Bridge Pa were our opponents. With a mixture of old and new we started the 1st of 3 X 20mins spells with a hiss and a roar, scoring 3 unanswered tries to go up 19 to 0.  With a large squad there was a number of changes throughout the game to have a look at all players.
Over all a good run out with us just pipping them in the end by 3 points.  Kitz Moleli continued his form from last year  and welcome back to big winger Dela Sene who made some telling runs.  Props Morunga and Matty B impressed with strong ball carriers and Aaron Halas brought plenty all round.  A couple of work-ons to iron out over the next two weeks but we are looking forward to working with this bunch of lads this season.   All the best for Willy Halpin on his recovery after injuring his ankle in his comeback game from a broken leg.
DID YOU KNOW
    THAT it was certainly an early St Patricks Day present to the Napier Old Boys Marist Club from our WIT Trust Premier squad on making it back to back Spillane Cup victories at the Taupo hosted 90th tournament after having also won the trophy at the 89th Napier hosted event in 2020.  Thanks Guys you did your Club proud.
    THAT the St Johns College 1st XV squad are scheduled to hold their annual  match against the Napier Collison Repair NOBM Colts on Saturday 3 April.  The match will for the first time is being played for the ‘Foundation Cup’, which represents the colleges rugby foundation, committee and the old boys of the college and club.  Details of venue and time to be announced nearer to the date.
ALSO
The St John’s Rugby Foundation will also be holding dinner with high profile guest speaker Sir Michael Jones to be held on Friday 9 April.  The squad is also having pre-season South Island tour over the period 17-25 April with match details to be announced shortly.  To keep up with St John’s College rugby head to the Facebook page ‘St John’s College Rugby Foundation’.
THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of – be they family, friends or workmates.  We have vacancies in all grades from Colts through to Premiers.
“Team up with the  ‘GREEN MACHINE’ in 2021  –  New Players WELCOME
      THAT a 34 year flashback to an earlier Spillane Cup win.  Back in 1987 saw the former crack three time Maddison Trophy winning Marist team successfully led by captain Brent Nelson take out the sort after trophy at the 56th tournament hosted by the former Gisborne Marist Club. (now Gisborne OBM)
And on the pathway to the win saw Napier (should say All Black to be Matt Cooper, with his six penalties) account for Wellington MSP 18-13 in the Saturdays opening round.  In the other Spillane division match, Hutt Valley Marist beat their Auckland counterparts in extra time 14-10.
And in the Mondays final, Napier easily cleaned out Hutt Marist (now Hutt OBM) by 38-4 to take out the 1987 Spillane Cup.  Napier’s Mat Cooper, Craig Ferris, John Bird and Pat Benson were all selected for the Tournament XV.  The Easter triumph was but a pipe opener to what was to come………
And once again the Maddison Trophy beckoned  –  11 matches played and 11 wins says it all.  Top Maddison Trophy round point scorer with an impressive 4 tries, 37 conversions, 23 penalties, 4 drop goals was Peter O’Shaughnessy with – 165 points.   What a season !
 THAT  we wish Nelson Marist all the best for a successful delayed 75th Jubilee over Anzac weekend 23-25 April these celebrations which were originally due to be held in 2020 until Covid-19 got in the way.
THAT now is the time to consider becoming a Gold Card member of the Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Club.
Checkout the benefits:  >>> Non Playing Membership (value $50)   >>> 200 Club Ticket (value $60)  >>>    >>> Complimentary entry to the Club’s annual Dinner & Trophy Presentations     >>>  $60 Club Bar credit on your membership card   >>> 10% discount on Club merchandise    >>> Entry in the weekly members draw    >>> Invitation to a special function for Gold Card members prior to a home Premier game.   And the cost – $200.
For expressions of interest please reply to –  Wade Colville-Smith – 021 059 3943   or  eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz  /  0274 470 330
THAT it might pay for Hawkes club rugby followers if they already haven’t to hook up with the ‘Hawkes Bay App’ on your phone or other device if you wish keep up with the play.   Former Hawkes Bay Today rugby scribe Shane Hurndell certainly made a good fist of match reports and articles last season and he has already posted a good coverage both the lead up and the outcomes of our two Hawkes NZ Marist affiliated clubs who featured at last weekends 90th Spillane Tournament in Taupo.  We look forward to more of Shanes future articles both previews and match reports during the coming club and representative rugby season.
THAT only in Ireland  –  May you get all your wishes but one, so that you will always have something to strive for !
        PHEW  . . . what a great weekend away at the 90th edition of the North Island Marist Spillane tournament in Taupo even if took nearly 4 hours to get home.  A serious head-on smash 20 minutes south of Taupo causing massive traffic delays both ways on state Highway 5.
THE FIRST . . . sculpture of a female cricketer in Australia will be installed at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as Cricket Australia seeks to redress the imbalance of public recognition for women in Aussie cricket.  All the current statues erected to cricketers across the ditch are males, 73 in total.
THE . . . 91st and 92nd editions of the North Island Marist Spillane Tournament will also be held in Taupo. This has been done to help boost the profile of the Taupo Marist Rugby Club. One just hopes the exorbitant price of alcohol in a bottle ($7.00) price gets a look at.
THE SIX NATIONS . . . Scotland and Ireland have now played each other 58 times after last week end’s fixture. The Irish winning 26, the Scots 26 and five have been drawn. The hapless Italians have continued their losing streak. Now 31 matches since they last tasted victoy against Scotland at Murrayfield in 2015.
NEXT WEEKEND . . . we have the New Zealand Track and Field Champs taking place in our own backyard at the Mitre 10 sports park. These having been delayed because of Covid restrictions at the start of March.  While the Walsh versus Gill clash will be one of the field event highlights there will be an equally enthralling match on the track in the senior womens 400m.  This sees flatmates and college team mates Izzy Neal and Camryn Smart going head to head over the one lapper.  Neal is currently ranked number one in the country but Smart, the 19 year old daughter of 1996 Olympian Toni Hodgkinson has been nipping at Neal’s heels all season.
MY QUOTE . . . of the week. Comes from America’s Cup winning skipper Peter Burling at the end of winning race nine on Tuesday arvo.  “Five coms guys lets me use the eyes in the back of my head.”
DID YOU KNOW . . . that Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson and Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Peter Burling both attended Tauranga Boys’ High (2004-08) at the same time.  Ironically current ABs skipper made his first appearance in the Tauranga Boys’ High 1st XV in 2009.
KNOCKING UP . . . birthdays in the club that I know of are the Green Machine’s Paul Bickle on Thursday and Ellery Wilson on Friday.
AND NOW . . . a something from the useless information file.  With it being St Patricks Day on Wednesday I thought I’d trot this out.  When visiting the Guinness Brewery in Dublin a few years ago I was amazed to learn that some of the hops that go into making the famous black  “Mother’s Milk” are actually grown in the Nelson region of Godzone!
Cheers McGoo
THAT an important reminder to our New Zealand Marist affiliate clubs  –  If any of your players are on the move at any time,  maybe a work transfer or a change to live in a new location we would appreciate if you notified us or the affiliate Marist club in the region they are going to so that the local club can get in touch with the player and invite them to ‘team up’ with them.  They maybe even in the position to assist with employment and or accommodation.  Make Sure you let your players know that they will be welcome to join an affiliate club in the area they are heading to.
THAT we welcome Hannon Brighouse back into the Premier squad after a season away and we look forward to him adding some more firepower and beef to the team as we move toward the kickoff of the 2021 Premier club season with our opening Nash Cup encounter against Clive on Friday 2 April.
THAT the following is another little Covid-19 gem…… ‘Having some states lock down and some states not lock down is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool….’
++++   Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m possible”.
THEY SAID IT
“But we’re still going there with the goal of winning the cup at an event we are treating like a pre-season camp.”
Coach and former Magpies halfback Ellery Wilson on the youthful Napier Old Boys Marist side prior to their attempt to retain the Spillane Cup at last weekend’s 90th annual New Zealand Marist rugby tournament in Taupo.
“The boys showed a bit of resolve to come back in the second half .”
A delighted NOBM Premier coach Ellery Wilson after his side took out the game 27-26 against Hutt OBM after trailing15-26 at the break.
“I’m really happy. A lot of young guys stepped up.”
Coach Ellery Wilson said after NOBM’s 31-29 victory against HRS in the final of the 90th Spillane tournament
The Leprauchan Comments
Paddy and Joseph were walking home from Mulligans Irish bar on Halloween night.
They decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery just for laughs.
Right in the middle of the cemetery, they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.
Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.
“Jaysus Man, ya frightened the life outa us”
Paddy called as he caught his breath.
“You scared us half to death — we thought you were a ghost!
What are you doing working here so late at night?” Joseph called.
“My friends are such fools!” the old man grumbled. “They misspelt my name and here I have to correct it!”
Murphy lost his eye in an accident and couldn’t afford the price of a glass eye.
So he carved one out of wood. But he was so self-conscious that he never left the house.
Finally, his friend Paddy came over and forced him to go out.
“There’s a dance over at the club,” he said.
“So what if one of your eyes is made out of wood?”
“All right,” said Murphy, “but if anybody makes fun of my eye I’m leaving.”
He went to the dance and stood around, trying to build up his courage.
And then he saw a woman standing alone in the corner. She was very attractive, but she had a hunchback.
“She’s worse off than me,” Murphy thought. “The least I can do is ask her to dance.
He walked across the crowded dance floor and approached the girl.
Would you care to dance? he asked.
Would I?!” she exclaimed.
“That does it,” he shouted, “Hunchback! Hunchback!”
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  –  Pop in for cool Tui or two  – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.    All members and Friends Welcome
