NASH CUP – Round 2

WIT TRUST NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST PREMIERS 85 CENTRAL SPORTS 12

Another fine day in the Bay was just the platform we wanted to help celebrate one of the clubs hardest working players – Pouvi Fatialofa in his 100th appearance for the Clubs premier team, and the boys didn’t disappoint. After what only one could describe as a bump in the road by letting through the first try, the team quickly took got a wakeup call from Matty G to say “whoops fullas, that was not in the script”. Just take a breath and start again.

And it was from that point the boys snapped into gear and quickly got into their work. The forwards showed that there will be no backward step this year and anyone in front of them will be hit with the full power they possess and that they’ll leave nothing in the tank. This very fit young forward pack which trains and plays hard, quickly got over the top of the visitors eight with pressure, skill and passion, and to follow the trust in Coach Gowler’s game plan.

Barnstorming runs from Hannon Brighouse and the ever-present monster of Ricky Hayes were a real highlight. The shear pace and power these young men showed us today was something special and there were several occasions where all three managers looked at each other shaking our heads in disbelief.

With all the hard work completed up front, it allowed the rock stars to show just how much they are enjoying their rugby. Their straight running, fast hands, and the good lines they ran, allowed them to score some scintillating tries.

Bucky was on fire early in the game and ended the day with four well-constructed tries. Liam Edwards has been a point-scoring machine in his first two hit outs, but more importantly he set up so many tries that left Coach Gowler with a smile not often seen in a rugby game in recent years, I am sure Liam will try and claim them. Defence has been the battle cry for the backs at training, and the defence I saw today was very pleasing with the inside three being dominant in the tackle and over the ball.

Overall you cannot be unhappy with a 85-12 score line, and this was another good build-up for next week’s battle vs Hastings, but that’s next week’s story…

Our 3-2-1s this week went to Saia, Liam, and our centurion Pouvi.

TOWN & COUNTRY PRATT TROPHY Round 1

RICHARD KEPOKA BUILDERS NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST PREMIER Development 17 OTANE 17

NOBM Development started off the season against Otane who once again turned up with a vocal sideline and a team that wanted to play. The game started off and stayed a physical encounter for the entire 80mins. Adam Chapman and the Otane 1st five exchanging penalties in the first five mins and these were the only points until Otane crossed the line in the 28th Min.

Going into halftime 10-3 down the boys knew and enjoyed this challenge and started off the 2nd half well. In the 67th minute Willy Mead who is back after a few years away sinking a few made a well executed dart and got through the Otane defence. At 10 all and both teams were out on their feet when Max Martin made a great break and thankfully had TK on his shoulder to finish it off with an awesome try in the 83rd minute.

This unfortunately was not the end, Otane managed to dot down in the 86th minute under the posts to finish the tight game 17 all. Not the end result that we wanted but every player will be feeling it today and can hold their heads up high. Luke had a massive game at #6 and played himself into the ground and took out the Player of the Day closely followed by Isaac Aitken at the back #15 who had a great 80mins, Dan Price also deserves a mention on a tough 80mins.

DID YOU KNOW

THAT a little background on WIT Trust OBM Premiers fullback Liam Edwards record breaking scoring in last Saturdays 119-12 Nash Cup win over Napier Tech. Prior to Liam’s 49 point haul which consisted of 3 tries and 17 conversions (he didn’t miss one kick all afternoon) the previous record holder was Napier Pirates Aayden Clarke who accumulated 46 points in Pirates 131-0 against MAC in 2006. On the club front the highest individual points scored by a Napier Old Boys Marist Premier player prior to Liam’s high scoring tally was the 45 points posted by midfield back Sam Giddens also against MAC in his sides 115-0 win in 2009.

THAT must extend an apology to Liam Edwards for my errors in the postmatch jottings against Tech in last weeks edition of TeamTalk for incorrectly referring to him as Liam Halpin – senior moment I guess !!! Ed

THAT in the clubs Premier fixture against Central Sports yesterday the team celebrated another milestone in sharing the occasion with flanker Pouvi Fatialofa achieving his 100th game Premier game. A brief candid pic sees Pouvi on the right joined by veteran Migao Lauanao who is now sitting on a mere 247 outings in the teams colours ! Certainly a great effort from you guys so just keep on playing you’re a long time with your boots hung up when that day does come…..

THAT A questioning man is halfway to being wise.

THAT future issues of TeamTalk could be coming to your from across the ditch over the coming month due to spending some time with family in Melbourne. May even incorporate a bit of AFL and Melbourne Rebels comment with these live games right on ones the doorstep. So regular contributors don’t let that put you off from forwarding your reports and any other news item that you wish to be circulated to our extensive global mailing. Ed

THAT a message to our readers if over the next few weeks if you are not getting your weekly TeamTalk newsletters just send me an email. This is due to using my laptop while travelling instead of the usual desktop while I’m away and some members (hopefully not too many may not currently be in my L/T addressbook. Within excess of 1500 email addresses on the data base it is a constant job keeping it updated over two computers as people so often change them and forget to let everyone know.

THAT an important reminder to players both old and new that there are still vacancies in most grades – team training is now under way each Tuesday & Thursday at 6pm at Bond Field, Park Island >>> Come along and bring a mate. All new players and school leavers Welcome.

THAT a REMINDER notice to all former Napier High School Old Boys rugby players – mark Saturday 18 May on your calendar and diary – The Club is holding a get-together for you at our Park Island clubrooms which will tie in with our WIT Trust Premier team’s home game against old rivals Taradale (kick-off 3pm). The curtainraiser will be the clubs Premier Development XV vs Taradale at 1.15pm. Remember to pass the word around amongst your old team mates – See YOU at the club on the 18th May…

THAT if you know of anyone that is interested in joining our regular TeamTalk mailouts then please forward their name and email address to – eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz New members and supporters of our Rugby and affiliates Marist sports club always Welcome.

THAT SUBS are now DUE – message to non-playing members and supporters have YOU paid your 2019/20 subs yet >>> Make Sure YOU are in the weekly financial Members Cash Draw

++++ I didn’t get there by wishing for it or hoping for it, but by working for it.

THEY SAID IT

“Having Gatland coaching the All Blacks could be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.”
Dominion Post Rugby scribe Brendan Venter.

“Not only is he fast, but he’s powerful, and he’s got an eye for the line. He’s playing good rugby. What’s that? Six tries in two weeks…not bad winger.”
Blues coach Leon MacDonald on 22 year old Rieko Ioane.

“This will change the entire fabric of international sports hosting. I think everything changes now. We’ll certainly be having a look at security in depth. I think the idea of New Zealand being a safe haven is gone now.”
NZ Cricket ceo David White.

The Leprechaun Comments

Two Irishmen looking for work see a sign that reads TREE FELLERS WANTED. “Oh, now, look at that,” said Paddy. “What a pity there’s only de two of us!”

~~~~~~~
Three guys – one Irish, one English, and one Scottish – are out walking along the beach together one day. They come across a lantern and a genie pops out of it.
“I will give you each one wish, that’s three wishes in total,” says the genie.
The Scottish guy says, “I am a fisherman, my dad’s a fisherman, his dad was a fisherman and my son will be one too. I want all the oceans full of fish for all eternity.” So, with a blink of the genie’s eye, the oceans were teeming with fish.
The Englishman was amazed, so he said, “I want a wall around England, protecting her, so that no one will get in for all eternity.” Again, with a blink of the genie’s eye, there was a huge wall around England.
The Irishman asks, “I’m very curious. Please tell me more about this wall.” The genie explains, “Well, it’s about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick, protecting England so that nothing can get in or out.”
The Irishman says, “Fill it up with water.”
~~~~~~~

Mrs Pete Monaghan came into the newspaper office to pay for her husband’s death notice. She was told by the kindly newsman that it was a dollar per word and he remembered Pete and wasn’t it too bad about him passing away.
She thanked him for his kind words and bemoaned the fact that she only had two dollars. So she wrote out the obituary, “Pete died.” The newsman took a look and said he thought old Pete deserved more and he’d give her three more words at no charge.
Mrs Pete Monaghan thanked him and changed it to: “Pete died. Boat for sale”.”

We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday – Pop in for cool Tui or two – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat. All members and Friends Welcome …………. Ed
