Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?
We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist  –  that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.
At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.
In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

Recruit to grow our Club

We need you ALL to become recruiters for the Club  –  we were light on numbers in pretty much all grades this year, and we need more depth across all of the teams in 2025 if we are to be a truly strong Club.

YOU are the GreenMachines best recruiters and we need you all to drag your mates over from other Clubs or off the couch and out of retirement or in from other countries.

Bring your little brothers, and your big brothers  –  bring your mates and their mates and your neighbours and workmates and their brothers and cousins and their mates and neighbours.

Bring them ALL to NOB Marist in 2025 and tell them that…

·         They will be welcomed warmly and treated with respect

·         They will receive great coaching and support

·         Their ability and effort will speak for itself, and

·         We want to have them with us in 2025.

Your Club needs YOU all to step up as recruiters and let’s make 2025 another transformational year for the GreenMachine.

Let’s build on what we have started this season and show everyone out there exactly what this mighty Club is all about.

TOGETHER, WE MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DID  YOU  KNOW
THAT   The Magpies left their win until they were playing in overtime.  Trailing 29-35 after playing catchup rugby throughout the game yesterday at McLean Park, it took speedy long haired Aussie winger Ben O’Donnell to streak down the sideline to score in the corner followed by a wideout conversion from Magpie fullback Harry Godfrey, after earlier missing easier kicks, to complete the comeback and nudge the scoreboard up to – Hawkes Bay 36 – 35 Auckland  and the win.  Keeping the Magpies hopes alive as they head toward the quarter finals and the final round robin game encounter with the Wellington Lions next weekend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THAT on the subject of our clubs seeking new players every season, it is certainly a hardy annual that we are always on the lookout to adding numbers and talent to our ranks in all grades.  With a range of some 28 active NZM affiliate clubs throughout the country from Whangarei in the north to Invercargill in the south, we as a body have the field well covered.   But to maintain our status we collectively need to maintain numbers across the board for all grades in our clubs through our normal recruitment avenues  –  and also through the added benefit of our NZ Marist network.
This almost an untapped source of personnel, which ranges from players, coaches, administrators as well as general members.   Over the course of their working lives many people move around the country either on transfer or of their own choice.   This is the area that through our nationwide network of clubs we should communicate with our affiliates in advance and let them know of these Marist men who are moving to their region.
Also to inform these members who are moving of the local NZM club where they are heading to and maybe a contact name/number of someone who will welcome them into their ranks etc.  And maybe help them sort out initial accommodation and if necessary employment opportunities as well as introductions to club members etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of  –  be they family, friends or workmates.     In 2025 we will vacancies in all grades from  Colts  through to  Premiers  so remember   –   Let it be known that  New Players will always be Welcome at Napier Old Boys Marist  –  Also invite a friend or a new players to  ‘Team up with NOBM in 2025….
·        IRISH LOGIC ~  “A good friend is like a four-leaf clover. Hard to find and lucky to have. ”
HERE and THERE . . .
Celebrating 29 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .
HERE’S TO . . . South Canterbury for breaking a long-standing New Zealand rugby record last weekend. With their 28-24 away over Horowhenua-Kapiti they’ve now amassed 37 consecutive wins in the Heartland Championship.  No men’s team of New Zealand’s first-class rugby have ever achieved more.  The Hawke’s Bay Magpies held the record previously with 36 consecutive wins in the old NPC Second Division between 2001-2004.
THE . . .  Hawke’s Bay Tui finished their 2024 campaign in style by bowling the defending Farah Palmer Cup champions the Auckland Storm 48-24.  In doing so they finished the season with two wins and four losses.  The Tui scored 27 tries, 16 conversions and one penalty and conceded 35 tries and 16 conversions.  Top points scorer was Krysten Cottrell with 33 points, top try scorers were Jaimee Robin, Tempress Lauvao and Maleta Pailate with three tries each.  There was a total of 18 different point scorers for the season.
OWING TO . . . the Hawke’s Bay Magpies dismal performance on the park against the Naki Bulls last Friday was probably a contributing factor in the poor response to the charity auction of the special match day jerseys.  The fifth year of this event supported Dementia Hawke’s Bay with a Magnolia flower used with various colours.  The jerseys for this event are purchased by major Union sponsor Total Energies.  The playing XV jerseys had a reserve of $400 and the subs a reserve of $300.  Of the 23 jerseys only nine were bid on and sold.  I managed to score Hintzy’s #3 jersey at the reserve price and now have four of the charity auction jerseys in my collection.  The other unsold jerseys have since been relisted on Trade Me at the $300 and $400 reserves.  This round of the charity auction closes on Thursday 3rd of October.
THE . . . official crowd attendance at the Cake Tin last night for the All Blacks vs Wallabies clash was 31,893.  It was a successful first test at the venue for me, partner Sue, grandson Jake and daughter Olivia.  My last test attendance in the capital was the final ever test at Athletic Park on June 26th 1999 against the Frogs.
A NICE SHORT ONE . . . Where do bad rainbows go?  To prism. It’s a light sentence, but it gives the time to reflect.
THAT  Do you know someone missing these newsletters ?   If you know someone that would like to receive our Napier Old Boys Marist weekly newsletters,  please forward this email on to them  –  to forward their address to   –   eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz          We know there are supporters out there who will have changed their email addresses who will want to receive  the latest info and messages from our club.
THAT     Mossy was an Ireland supporter who lived a long life before his time came to slip off this mortal coil.
As he walked up to the pearly gates, St Peter stops him and asks his name. ‘Maurice Murphy’ is the response.
St Peter shakes his head sadly as he looks in his book.  “It seems you spent most of your money on beer and what was left of it on the horses. I’m afraid there’s only one place you are going.”
So, Mossy trudges back down the stairs with a heavy heart.  At the bottom of the stars, there’s a pair of double doors.  When he pushes them open, he steps into a blinding light.   As he blinks and looks around, he is overcome with joy.  He is in Lansdowne Road surrounded by thousands of other fans in green jerseys.
At the other end of the stadium is a huge TV screen with the words “Next repeat performance starts in four minutes.”   He staggers to the nearest seat with tears of relief on his cheeks.
Whereupon the fella next to him leans over.  “Don’t get carried away, Mossy, we are in Hell and it’s for all eternity.  But the real bad news is they’ve only got one DVD and it’s England winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup.”
THAT  I’m certainly feeling somewhat oval balled out following a real feast viewing across a trio of sports yesterday.  Initially from Magpies – Auckland NPC afternoon encounter from McLean Park which climaxed with a stunning 36-35 win right on fulltime.   Then a shift across the Tasman to the MCG for the 2024 AFL Grand Final between two ‘out of town’ finalists which results in a win for the Brisbane Lions who roared home over the Sydney Swans in front of no less than some 100,013 spectators !   Gee they get great crowds in that southern city.  As an aside from the AFL Final the pre-match entertainment featured American Katy Perry who turned on $5 million pre-final show entertaining a full house.
And then of course to wrap a busy viewing day,  the 2nd Bledisloe Cup test from Sky Stadium, Wellington which saw the All Blacks get back on the horse at the venue following their first win at the venue since 2018, which was a 26-13 win against France.  Last nights result was an entertaining 33-13 Bledisloe win.  The match also featured the final  outings in the national colours for Both Sam Cane who was playing his 100th test and fiery little scrumhalf TJ Perenara who are both heading to Japan.
THAT Having started in all eight tests at No.10 this year Damian McKenzie has been subbed off only once enroute to five victories and three defeats.  Coach Scott Robertson has this week now passed the ignition keys on to two-time World Player of the Year Beauden Barrett.  This will be his 57th start at first five as opposed to 31 starts at fullback and 43 off the bench.
THAT  If  YOU wish to take the opportunity and want to have family members, relations or friends receive a copy of our regular TeamTalk newsletters just forward their name & email addresses to –  eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz
THAT  As usual we apologise for any errors or mistakes you may find in this edition.     Ed.
“Team up with the  ‘GREEN MACHINE’ again in 2024 – New Players are always WELCOME
THEY SAID IT
“It’s been awesome.  He came in late last night as a bit of a fly on the wall.  I’m picking his brain, everybody is picking his brain, around the little things he’s seeing.  He’s claiming he doesn’t watch too much footy  anymore living over on the Gold Coast but the little bits he’s giving you, he’s all over it.”
All Blacks assistant coach Jason Holland on ‘The Professor’ Wayne Smith.
“It’s something we ‘re really well aware of, like the rest of the New Zealand public.  It’s a record we are not proud of.  The way you deal with unwanted records is by performance.  That’s been our main focus – a performance we can be proud of.”
Scott Robertson on the All Blacks not winning at Sky Stadium since beating Scotland in 1922.
“I’ve managed to get a few test matches under my belt, which is super special.”
Sam Cane
“They’re both huge parts of New Zealand rugby.  I’m not sure it’s their last games but whichever way it goes, we want to show them massive respect.  I’m not sure they’re willing to say it’s.  Early over yet.”
Jason Holland on Sam Cane and TJ Perenara’s  last home outings as All Blacks.
“It will be cool. When they named the team the other day and I saw Baz named at 10.  We’ve played a lot of games at 9-10 for the Hurricanes, a lot in this stadium together. To be able to go out there with my bro at 10 is something I’m excited for and something I’ll cherish.”
TJ Perenara on teaming up with Beauden Barrett again.
“As a Wellington man and the most-capped Hurricane of all time, we know that TJ is a crowd favourite in the capital and we look forward to him expressing himself on the field in front of friends and whānau at home.”
Coach Scott Robertson.
The Leprauchan Comments
Two very competitive Irish friends decided to go skydiving. They booked a jump at a local airfield, went up in the plane and both jumped out, with Mick in the lead.
Mick hurtled through the air for a couple of minutes, then pulled his ripcord and the parachute opened perfectly, slowing him down.
Then, Danny pulled his ripcord, but nothing happened, he just kept falling straight down, going faster and faster.
As Danny flew passed his friend, Mick got irritated that his friend was traveling faster than him.
So, he unbuckled his harness and yelled out, “So Danny, you want to be racing?”
A friend asked O’Shea, “Now that you are retired, what do you do to keep your day interesting.”
“Well, for example”, replied O’Shea, “the other day I walked out of a shop and there was a cop writing out a parking ticket so I said, ‘Come on doughnut boy, how about giving a senior citizen a break.’
The officer ignored me and continued writing the ticket, so I called him a ‘jerk’.
His only response to me was to write another ticket for having worn out tires. I told him that he should try to catch some real criminals, but I didn’t think that he was bright enough to catch a cold.
And one it went, the more I abused him the more tickets he placed on the windshield.
After 20 minutes my bus pulled up, so I boarded and took it back home. Now that I’m retired, I try to have a little fun each day. It’s important at my age.”
Did you hear about an Irish blond who sitting in a bar wondering why she only has 3 sisters when her brother has 4 !
Pat Murphy and his two mates Mike and Fred were helping to build the Empire State Building. For about the last month they’d been complaining about always getting the same thing for their lunch. Mike and Fred said they’d asked their wives for something different now and again but nothing changed.
Sitting high up on the building’s framework one day they opened their lunchboxes hoping to see something different. “Bloody hell,” said Mike, “this is past a joke, bloody cheese and marmite sandwiches again, l’ve had it,” and he jumped off to his death.
Fred opened his box and yelled,” oh, my bloody godfather, mutton and pickles again, l’ve had a gutsful of this,” and he jumped off.
Pat gingerly opened his box and saw one sandwich with a dried up potato patty in it. He said to himself,” oh my God, not again, l can’t eat another one of these,” and jumped off to his death.
At the funerals the three widows were talking about the situation and Mike’s widow said, “ l didn’t think it was so serious, l was going to put something different in Mike’s lunch next week.”
Fred’s widow said, “ l didn’t think Fred was in such a hurry for a change in his lunch, if l’d realized that l would have changed it the next day.”
Pat’s widow had a look of bewilderment on her face when she said, “ l can’t understand Pat, he’s been making his own lunches for years.”
