Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?
We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal. Our teams are always well presented.
At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.
In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers. To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

DID YOU KNOW
THAT our club members were stunned to learn of the passing of Napier Old Boys Marist stalwart Joe Kelly during the past week following an accident while he was out cycling last Sunday morning. Seriously injured he was admitted to hospital and passed away on Wednesday. The Napier Old Boys Marist members and Club extended our deepest sympathy to his wife Kathy and children Sarah, Rowena and Mike and his grandchildren…….
Joe Kelly arrived in Napier from Ireland as a seaman in the mid-1960’s where he joined up with the Napier Marist Rugby Club and proceeded to ’learn the game’ in the front row playing for the clubs Senior B team. He didn’t take long to begin ‘educating’ his new clubmates on life in the Emerald Isles and of his love of Guinness. One will always remember a team match against the Waikare Club on their home ground followed by the aftermatch at the local hotel. On the way back to Napier a stopover beside Lake Tutira saw Joe climb on top a picnic table and entertained his new teammates with a passionate spirited rendition of the traditional southern Irish song ‘Kevin Barry’, a popular and very moving Irish Republican Army rebel song recounting his death
There have been so many happy memories of days gone by in the company of Joe and his tales of experiences at sea and around the globe both here and at home. He was a great volunteer, committee man and helper with club activites before and after our clubs amalgamated in 1990. And he was proactive along with others in establishing the very financially successful weekly Housie nights that the club ran for several years in the 1990’s.
And he wasn’t backward in support of our teams and players and was most instrumental in establishing the ‘Skerries Exchange’. This was the connection between Napier Marist and the local coastal rugby club Skerries RFC in his former home town, which is out of Dublin in the province of Leinster. This arrangement saw quite a number of our Napier Marist players and later Napier Old Boys Marist players travel to Ireland over the years for a season of rugby and the reverse occurred with Irish players from the Skerries club who came out and experienced a season in New Zealand playing rugby for our Club. It has also seen over the years a number of the exchange players marrying local girls in both countries and stay on to live there. All in all a testimony to Joes foresight.
Also in 2002 and because of the motivation of Joe, a Napier Old Boys Marist team made a tour of Ireland which saw the Skerries club assisting with arranging the tour itinerary. Napier players who made this memorable trip still talk about the experience and the wonderful hospitality they were treated to by their hosts.
Joseph Kelly was honoured with Life Membership of the Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Club in 1991.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joe Kellys funeral service and send-off was held at the
Napier Old Boys Marist clubrooms today Monday 29th July at 2pm.
There was a very large turnout of club members, family and friends who would have been moved by
the many tributes and tales of Joe and of his life both in Ireland and New Zealand.
And especially of his love for his family during his near sixty years in Napier.
Joseph Kelly will certainly be forever remembered
THAT we extend our Congratulations to NOBM Premiers flanker Josh Gimblett and winger Kere Penetito on their selection for Hawkes Bay in yesterdays Ranfurly Shield challenge from the Whanganui XV. The match resulted in a very convincing 80-5 win to the Magpies which included a brace of tries to talented young winger Kere Penetito who also had a touchdown in the opening Shield win vs King Country last month.
THAT – A 1990 Flashback from the aftermatch following the Maddison Trophy Final between Napier Marist vs Napier Tech at McLean Park. This candid shot of former Marist President Joe Kelly and Napier Old Boys chairman Bill Reilly in deep discussion on a subject foremost on everyones minds at the time – Amalgamation. As at the time nothing had been formalised and was later to be passed at the end of the year.
THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of – be they family, friends or workmates. In 2025 we will vacancies in all grades from Colts through to Premiers so remember – New Players will always be Welcome at Napier Old Boys Marist
IRISH LOGIC ~ “There are no strangers here, only friends that have not yet met.”
HERE and THERE . . .
Celebrating 29 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .
JUST . . . 11 of the Hawke’s Bay Magpies match day 23 for the Ranfurly Shield defence against Whanganui have played club rugby in the province in 2024.
MAGPIES . . . first-five Harry Godfrey’s 10 conversions against Ranfurly Shield challengers Whanganui on Saturday was the second time he’s achieved the feat. Fellow squad member Lincoln McClutchie has twice slotted 9 conversions in a Shield game. The record for the most on a Ranfurly Shield game is 14 by Wellington Lions Simon Mannix.
IN THE . . . Hawke’s Bay Magpies six Ranfurly Shield defences against Heartland sides the Magpies have passed 50 on five occasions. 2024 vs Whanganui 80 and Wairarapa Bush 57, 2022 vs Poverty Bay 95 and South Canterbury 38, 2021 vs Ngati Porou East Coast 93 and North Otago 85.
ONE OF THE . . . first time try scorers for the Hawke’s Bay Magpies in Saturday’s Ranfurly Shield clash with Whanganui was long serving prop Joel Hintz. The 28-year-old was playing his 52nd game for the province. Joel has also played first class rugby for Canterbury (2 games), the Wellington Lions (11 games), New England Free Jacks (12 games), Sharks (2 games) and one match for the Western Force without ever scoring a try!
WITH . . . all the furore over the readiness of McLean Park’s due scheduled maintenance no one has questioned how much this cost? Jeez the huge surface upgrade a few years ago cost around $5M at the time.
THIS WEEK . . . we lost another NOBM Life Member in Joseph Kelly. I’ve personally known Joe and Kathy since 1978-79 when he was our Marist Under 23 manager for a couple of seasons. I won’t go into details of that champion team’s record as I chronicled all that when our then coach Russ Exeter passed away. I for one, like many, are going to miss his presence and lovely chats. His passing has certainly left a huge gap, still the many happy times we had together will always be a treasure to us all. I love you Joe Kelly.
A LITTLE BOY. . . was waiting for his mom to come out of the local store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” The little boy replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street and at the end turn right.” The man thanked the boy and said, “I’m the new minister in town. I’d like you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to heaven.” The little boy replied with a chuckle. “Awww, come on…You don’t even know the way to the Post Office.”
THAT unfortunately our All Black Mens Sevens team has certainly dropped off the pace losing at the backend of their tournament with a fifth place finish. On top of the heap was France who beat perennial front runners Fiji 28-7 to win Olympic Games Paris 2024 men’s rugby sevens gold, while South Africa overcome Australia to secure bronze in front of 69,000 fervent fans at Stade de France.
“Team up with the ‘GREEN MACHINE’ again in 2024 – New Players are always WELCOME
THEY SAID IT
“I’ve got a massive respect for my Hurricanes family and I loved serving them for 11 years. But I think it’s the right time for a change and I spent a lot of quiet time with my family thinking about things before making this decision.”
Ardie Savea
“His signing with us speaks to his commitment to his Pacific heritage and a dedication to nurturing the next generation of Pacific players.”
Moana Pacifica coach Tana Umaga.
“For me you’ve got to go with your best player and the best player in the world last year was Ardie Savea — and he has been for a while. It was a two-horse race between him and Antoine Dupont for a couple of years there. I thought Ardie was robbed a couple of years ago, but it is what it is.”
Aaron Smith told the Rugby Direct podcast that Savea would be a great captain.
“Ardie’s credentials of when he’s led and how he’s led probably give him a jump-start. He led us in certain games in 2021 [including the centenary victory against the Springboks] and last year at the World Cup. He leant heavily on us older boys, but his performances speak for themselves. When he comes into a huddle and says something, you know he’s doing it.”
Aaron Smith continues.
The Leprauchan Comments
Pat is at the airport with a sack over each shoulder and when he is stopped by customs they find both sacks a full of mobile phones.
When asked why Pat said, “Well officer while I was on my travels in America I got a phone call from my mate Mick and he is starting up a jazz band and could I bring him back two saxaphones.”
For two solid hours, Mrs. Casey told the man sitting next to her on the plane about her grandchildren. She had even produced a plastic-foldout photo album of all twelve of the children. Mrs. Casey finally realized that she had dominated the entire conversation with her grandchildren. “Oh, I’ve done all the talking, and I’m so sorry. I know you certainly must have something to say. Please tell me, what do you think of my grandchildren?”
“It was a cold Friday evening when the doorbell rang is Mrs Molloy’s house. When she answered the door, Pat Glynn, her husband’s manager at the brewery, was stood on the doorstep.
‘Pat. Hello. Where’s my husband? He should have been home from work 3 hours ago?’ The man sighed. ‘I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, Mrs Molloy, but there was an accident over in the brewery. Your husband fell into a vat of Guinness and drowned’.
‘Oh my God’ she replied. ‘Please tell me it was quick?!’ ‘Well… no. It wasn’t. He climbed out 4 times to relieve himself”
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday – Pop in for cool Tui or two – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat. All members and friends Welcome …………. Ed
