“Team up with a Winning Club in 2022”

Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?

We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.

At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.

In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Loyalty to your Club and loyalty to your team mates
is all that is asked of a true Marist man
TO OUR SPONSORS
We have certainly appreciated your generous Support over the past seasons
and look forward to you hopefully supporting us once again in 2023
DID YOU KNOW
THAT it is certainly good to be back home and on the keyboard once again knocking out the first edition of TeamTalk  now in its 52nd year, after a six week stint visiting three of our daughters and their families who are all long term residents of Melbourne.  The Covid outbreak globally over the past few years has certainly kept so many families apart and after being a regular visitor to Australia since 1988 it was great to be together again for Christmas.  And now its also certainly good to be back home in the Bay again awaiting another club season to kickoff,  that is apart from the weather –  hardly a traditional Hawkes Bay summer at present !  One plus is that grounds will be in good nick for the season ahead…. And not so many grass burns from pre-season training for our players….
In closure being away since late November I must take this opportunity to belatedly on behalf of the NOBM club extend to you our members and families the compliments of the season and our best wishes for a successful 2023 season both on and off the pitch, field and courts.    Ed.
THAT  to our Sponsors and Members  –  Your loyal backing as in past seasons with our various funding options is always awaiting your Support  –  THANK YOU  –   with your backing we can again run our Club in a manner we can all be proud of.
THAT make 2023 the year that YOU invited a NEW player to join our Club.  Bring your mates along to Team up with NOBM.
THAT a special for our Ladies  –  Did the recent Black Ferns World Cup winning campaign inspired you to play rugby in 2023 ?     Join us as we grow the game at the grassroots level.  Send a message if you would like to play in 2023  to Wade Colville-Smith  –   wcolville.smith@gmail.com     Try something new in 2023….
THAT an important message to all players.  –  Invite your workmates, family and friends to  Team up with the Greens  in 2023.  You can assure them that we will find a NOBM team that they can fit in with.
THAT  It’s interesting to see the 2023 Nash Cup draw recently released  –  10 games featuring 5 home games, one of which is under lights on Bond Field vs Tech and 5 away fixtures. Plus a bye due to the pool of teams now features 11 clubs this season since Dannevirke’s Aotea have been included making up 11 teams in this seasons Nash Cup draw.
IRISH LOGIC   Where does an Irish family go on vacation?  A different pub
THAT  an important message to all players.  –  Make 2023 the year you introduce a New Player or Supporter to our Club.    We are always on the lookout for new talent as we will have vacancies in all teams …. Also support with team management as well as on the sidelines.    Invite your friends to  Team up with the Greens in 2023”  so we can have greater depth in numbers into the future for when we kick-off and about to commence our 2023 season.
THAT the following is a report from Napier City Councillor,  Maxine Boag, Nelson Park Ward.
“The best Community Christmas luncheon ever” was a comment I heard several times today at the Napier Marist Old Boys’ clubrooms, where well over 100 people enjoyed food, company and (for the children) presents.
Guests enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch, prepped, cooked and served by volunteers, of meat, ham, veges, with pavlova and ice cream to follow.
Organised by Jim and Joanne Gaudin, with sponsors including Tamatea Pak n Save, various government organisations, the Old Boys Marist, and Napier City Council – Te Kaunihera o Ahuriri, the lunch was attended by a diverse group of people, all taking advantage of the opportunity to eat Christmas lunch with others.   Kirsten Wise – Mayor of Napier came along and wished everybody a Merry Xmas – nice to have her with us; and NCC Councillor Richard McGrath helped throughout, making people laugh being one of his strengths!
The clubrooms are surrounded by open green fields, a playground for tamariki, with lots of light and air – ideal for the event.    We all had our own experience of the lunch today, but for me I enjoyed being part of this lunch which was prepared and presented in the spirit of kindness and giving, the true meaning of Christmas for many of us. May those values continue to motivate us as we move into the New Year.”
Some more wonderful feedback on our NOBM Clubrooms and surrounds.  It was very humbling to be able to help support this community event that was held pre-Christmas.
THAT  the inaugural 1991 NOBM Sevens lineup comprised of Mark Leifting, Jonathan O’Dowd,  Alan Gardiner, Mark McHattie,  Rick Nichol, Gary Exeter, Mick Dennehy, Peter O’Shaughnessy and Neil Weber.  The team coach was Jim Fitzsimons.  Two of the NOBM players Peter O’Shaughnessy and Neil Weber, due to their selection in the New Zealand Divisional XV’s tour of Australia,  made them the new clubs first ‘internationals’.
THAT we are still awaiting several cellphone Nos. which are still to be added to our coaches/managers list.
   THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of  –  be they family, friends or workmates.  In 2023 we will have vacancies in all grades from  Colts  through to  Premiers  so new players will always be Welcome.   Remind them to   >>>
“Team up with the  ‘GREEN MACHINE’ again in 2023  –  New Players are always WELCOME
THEY SAID IT
“You’d be foolish if you hadn’t prepared for it but I would be highly surprised if after 80 minutes, then 10 minutes each way, then sudden-death extra time – by which time there’ll be bugger all people standing – that someone hasn’t scored some points.”
– Steve Hansen speculating on the prospect of a penalty goal-kicking shoot-out to decide the semi-final against England.
“Things would get a bit heated out on the lawn. It’d be, ‘If you don’t stop crying in three seconds, you won’t be an All Black’.”
– New Zealand centre Jack Goodhue recalled boyhood backyard rugby games with his twin brother Josh and other siblings Axel and Cameron.
“I’ve got a massive family so my brother deals with it. They can be a distraction as well… my auntie is always great for that. She’s trying to tell me how to play number eight and giving my brother a few pointers as well.”
– England’s Billy Vunipola on the perils of accommodating ticket requests from a large, extended, rugby-mad family.
I’d rather regret the risks that didn’t work out than the chances I didn’t take at all.
The Leprauchan Comments
Reilly is walking through a graveyard when he comes across a headstone with the inscription
“Here lies an Irish politician and an honest man.”
‘Faith now,’ exclaims Reilly, ‘I wonder how they got the two of them in one grave.
Two Irish mothers, Kate and Lorna were talking about their sons.
Kate says, ‘My Patrick is such a saint. He works hard, doesn’t smoke, and he hasn’t so much as looked at a woman in over two years.’
Lorna responds, ‘Well, my Francis is a saint himself. Not only hasn’t he not looked at a woman in over three years, but he hasn’t touched a drop of liquor in all that time.’
‘My word,’ says Kate, ‘You must be so proud.’
‘I am,’ announces Lorna, ‘And when he’s paroled next month, I’m going to throw him a big party.
