TRYLINE IN SIGHT
ACTION from 2021 – Second half tryscorer Hannan Brighouse punchs through
Napier Tech’s defence in NOBM’s 35-17 Nash Cup win at Tremain Field.
DID YOU KNOW
THAT an important message to all players. – Make 2022 the year you bring along a new player to pre-season training. We are always on the lookout for new talent as we will have vacancies in all teams….. Invite your friends to ‘Team up with the Greens’ in 2022.
THAT the how often have you seen this shot as the match officials ponder over the many replays of tries being scored or maybe not, as well the possibility of foul play incidents. The introduction of TMO’s in 2001 has certainly had an impact on the game we grew up with considering that the referee previously was the sole judge of what had transpired and he/she made their decision on that.
Now days the ‘onfield’ officials continuously call on the TMO to decide what had actually occurred. This would often lead to delays and much discussion before any actual decision is made. At times it is actually almost became a committee meeting. So I guess we are in for much more of that in 2022.
HERE AND THERE with McGoo THERE’S NOT . . .. . . much happening rugby wise to report on. The Six Nations kicks off shortly with a scrum rule change being put to the test. The law trial is driven by the collective commitment to ensure player welfare is paramount across the code. Scrum stability and in particular the hooker ‘brake foot’ is the focus of the trial. Both hookers will be required to ensure one foot, the ‘brake foot’, is extended towards the opposition during the crouch and bind phases of the engagement sequence, with a resulting free kick if the ‘brake foot’ is not applied.
ONE OF . . . New Zealand’s longest standing track and field records celebrates its 60th birthday this week. On the 3rd of February 1962 in Christchurch Peter Snell set a new national record in the 800m with a time of 1:44.3s. Not even athletes of the calibre of John Walker or Nick Willis were able to lower it. The next long standing record on the list is in the mens long jump set in Whangarei in January 1968. Bob Thomas leapt 8.05m. The newest record was set last weekend at the annual Potts Classic when Zoe Hobbs broke her own 100m record that she’d only set just before Christmas.
THIS . . . Sunday sees the annual Cooks Gardens Classic track and field take place. One of my favourite tracks, where back in the day I won a few races. With the Covid 19 red traffic light system in operation this event will be run differently this year. The meet will be split into three sessions with only athletes whose event is in that session able to be in the stadium. They must leave the stadium immediately after competing. One of meets sponsors has a hotel nearby and will be providing an area for athletes to relax in.
AND NOW . . . a bit of a laugh. Woman at a jewellery store admiring a diamond ring, and as she leans down for a closer look, a little fart slips out. Hoping no one would notice she asks, “How much is that one?” The jeweller says, “Madam, if you farted looking at it, you’ll shit yourself when I tell you the price.!”
Cheers McGoo

FLASHBACK A well travelled warmup jacket
THAT I am about to throw out this jacket and thought it would be fun to share its story with you. It has had a long and interesting life. I got this jacket 26 years ago when my sister in law left it behind by mistake while we were on vacation together in the Shuswap Lake. That is in southern British Columbia, Canada. It was a jacket she got from an old boyfriend. I am guessing the jacket might be 35 years old. She was no longer with the boyfriend, but she used it as a running jacket.
I took it home with me to Fort St. John, in northern BC. I used it for camping and gardening. It has now reached the end of its life, but it owes nothing. In fact, it might be priceless. It appears in family pictures through time and has travelled extensively through BC and Alberta on many camping trips. Its longevity and history has sparked much conversation and laughter in our family. I hope this story does the same for your club members.
Lisa Verbisky
Thanks Lisa – Of interest the jacket is boldly branded across the back ‘Herberts Restaurant and Bar’. You can certainly be assured it will be of interest to many of our older members. No doubt the late publican and former player, coach, club captain and later a major sponsor of the old Napier Marist club, Dave Herbert would have had something to do with it – back in the day !
THAT the 91st SPILLANE TOURNAMENT – 2022 will be hosted by Taupo Marist in association with New Zealand Marist Federation at Owen Delaney Park – Saturday 12 March & Sunday 13 March
The games will consist of two 40-minute halves, on both the Saturday and the Sunday in both the SPILLANE Cup and HAM CUMING divisions.
The Brennan Cup, Colts and Presidents grade times etc will be confirmed at a later date.
Spillane Netball
The games will consist of two round robins of at least 4 games. Games will be 10min halves. All levels will be catered for in either the Competitive and Social Grade. All games are played on the Saturday only.
THAT heres a few more Lockdown Truths……. The spread of COVID-19 Is Based On Two Factors: 1. How Dense The Population 2. How Dense the Population is.
&
If you believe all this will end and we will get back to normal once we reopen everything…… Raise your Hand. Now slap yourself with it….. !
THAT For your Info – the NZ Marist website – http://www.maristrugby.org.nz/Home-
THAT with the amount of Super Rugby and international rugby planned to be hosted in New Zealand in 2022 the NZRU and the franchises will certainly be holding their breath. The possibility of border closures and lockdowns will be in the back of everyones minds. Officialdom ie the countrys leaders are certain to be triggerhappy in anticipation of having to react to the slightest whiff of Covid 19/ Omicron which could have a major impact on incoming teams travel plans.
Putting international games aside, the 2022 domestic representative and club rugby points tables could be nightmare for the organisers with some matches being played and while others could be postponed due to the fickle nature of this epidemic. We are certainly in trying times and it just ain’t what it used to be….
THAT a reminder to all NOBM players – Pass the word around amongst your team mates and also any likely New Players your know of – be they family, friends or workmates. We have vacancies in all grades from Colts through to Premiers. Remind them to –
“Team up with the ‘GREEN MACHINE’ in 2022 – New Players always WELCOME
++++ Play for what it says on the front of the jersey ..…. and everyone will remember what it says on the back.
THEY SAID IT

The Leprauchan Comments
Barry goes into a bar and orders one Guinness and seven shots of Tequila. The barman serves the shots and, when he’s finished pouring the Guinness, sees that Barry has finished the shots.
“Wow,” he said. “You drank those quickly!”
“I know,” replied Barry. “You would too if you had what I have.”
“What do you have?” asked the barman.
Barry digs in his pocket and pulls out 50 cents.
The barman says to Paddy, “Your glass is empty, fancy another one?”
Looking puzzled, Paddy says, “Why would I be needing two empty feckin’ glasses?”
An elderly couple on a road trip, Sean and Mary Kate, stopped for lunch. Back on the road, and after traveling about half an hour, Mary Kate realized that she left her glasses at the restaurant. To complicate matters, it was several miles before they could exit the interstate to turn around.
All the way back, in a classic grouchy old man style, Sean complained about the loss of time and the waste of fuel. He continued to berate Mary Kate, he just couldn’t believe that she could forget her glasses. Sean would not let up, but finally, to Mary Kate’s relief, they reach the restaurant.
As Mary Kate left the car to retrieve her glasses, Sean yelled to Mary Kate, “As long as you are going inside, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.”
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday – Pop in for cool Tui or two – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat. All members and Friends Welcome …………. Ed

No doubt the late publican and former player, coach, club captain and later a major sponsor of the old Napier Marist club, Dave Herbert would have had something to do with it – back in the day !

THEY SAID IT
”You’ve got to get your first tackle in early, even if it’s late.”
Ray Gravell, Welsh hardman explains his rugby philosophy.
”The relationship between the Welsh and the English is based on trust and understanding. They don’t trust us and we don’t understand them.”
Dudley Wood, English RFU secretary on Anglo-Welsh relations, 1986.
”Beer and Rugby are more or less synonymous.”
All Black Chris Laidlaw.
“Rugby is a game for the mentally deficient. That is why it was invented by the British. Who else but an Englishman could invent an oval ball?”

Ed
