Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?

We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal.  Our teams are always well presented.

At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.

In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers.  To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

“Team up with ‘The GREEN MACHINE’ in 2021  –  New Players WELCOME

THAT here is your Opportunity to support a worthy cause  –  read on >>>

A Special message to all our club members from WIT Trust Premier mid-fielder George Stratton.

Kia Ora friends and family!  We’re having a doo to farewell my doo.

This January 2021 marks three years since I’ve taken to my hair with a set of scissors.  The time has come to part ways with the locks and what better way to wave goodbye than to fundraise and donate to such a good cause, helping those struggling with cancer.

I will be cutting it on Saturday the 16th of January 2021, 3pm at the Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Club Rooms – come along for a BBQ and bevies. There will also be chances to bid to cut some of these locks off yourself.

Growing my hair has been easy, living with an illness is not. So I would love your support in raising awareness and kindly donating, big or small, it all helps!

Come along and get amongst, if you can’t make it and want to contribute, you can donate via the link below.

Thank you!
George

>>> So here is your chance members and friends to get along to the clubrooms this Saturday afternoon to catch the ‘shearing action’ and support a very worthy cause  –  Pass the word around….

THAT a REMINDER to our 2020 club trophy recipients who still have their cups.  Colts – Paul Lapa,  Thirds – Hayden Karekare, Jordan James.   Premier Reserves –  Kurt Chambers,  Hamiora Miringaroangi,  Adam Chapman.   Major Trophy awardees – Will Tremain,  Dwayne Smith,  Craig Gowler,  Terry Marsh.

While we currently have at least half of the club trophies back up on display on the clubrooms, we are now requesting that we would like the recipients who still have their trophies to please drop them back to the clubrooms bar when it is open late on Saturday afternoons.  Alternatively they could be dropped off at my residence at 69 Faraday Street (off Carlyle St) at anytime.  (Eddie Wilson  –  0274 470 330)

THAT only in Ireland  – There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

THAT an important reminder to our New Zealand Marist affiliate clubs  –  If any of your players are on the move at any time,  maybe a work transfer or a change to live in a new location we would appreciate if you notified us or the affiliate Marist club in the region they are going to so that the local club can get in touch with the player and invite them to ‘team up’ with them.  They maybe even in the position to assist with employment and or accommodation.  Make Sure you let your players know that they will be welcome to join an affiliate club in the area they are heading to.

THAT the following is a little bit of Napier Old Boys Marist History  –  Merge two of Hawkes Bays most successful clubs and the result is Napier Old Boys Marist…. a powerful force in Hawke’s Bay Sport. The new organisation was formed from the amalgamation of Marist and Napier Old Boys clubs in late 1990.

Both clubs have a proud history of sporting success since being founded in the early 1900’s. They are in fact among the Bays most successful clubs, with a total of some 28 Maddison Trophy titles between them within a 60 year period. Napier Old Boys, established in 1910, won the first of their 15 inter-city championships in 1930, while Marist, founded in 1908, first became champions in 1936 and finished with 11.

Anyone around during the heady days of the 1960’s and early 1970’s will relate tales of titanic battles between the two clubs for inter-town supremacy. Games between the McLean Park based clubs often attracted crowds of 4000 to 5000, more than for some Bay Rep matches these days.  Marist won the Maddison Trophy in 1962 and 63 and shared the title with Old Boys in 1969-the last season of the three season Hawke’s Bay Ranfurly Shield reign. The Kel Tremain led Napier Old Boys won the trophy seven times between 1964-71. The two clubs supplied near two thirds of the Bay Ranfurly Shield squad during that magnificent 1966-69 era.

Although Napier Old Boys failed to win the Maddison Trophy after sharing it with Taradale in 1971, they did win the Baywide championship in 1988.The provincial competition (for which the Maddison Trophy has been at stake from 1990) was won by Marist in 1987 (also their last Maddison inter-town success) and in 1989.

++++  Don’t let the fear of losing be greater than the excitement of winning.

THEY SAID IT

“Rugby backs can be identified because they generally have clean jerseys and identifiable partings in their hair… come the revolution the backs will be the first to be lined up against the wall and shot for living parasitically off the work of others.”
Former Wallaby Peter Fitzsimmons with tongue in cheek.

”Look what these bastards have done to Wales.  They’ve taken our coal, our water, our steel.  They buy our houses and they only live in them for a fortnight every 12 months. What have they given us?  Absolutely nothing.  We’ve been exploited, raped, controlled and punished by the English – and that’s who you are playing this afternoon.”
Former Lions and Wales player Phil Bennett and a pre-game pep talk before facing England, 1977.

Napier Marist Football

Youthful talent recognised

Napier Marist football  clubs Caleb Hunt, 14, has been
offered a full-time scholarship at the Ole Football
Academy in Wellington.

The talents of promising young Napier Marist footballer Caleb Hunt have been recognised with his being offered a fulltime spot at the prestigious Ole Academy in Wellington. The 14-old Napier Boys High student says he is grateful to be selected and is looking forward to playing and training with the best players in Wellington when he moves to the capital on January 23 where he will be accommodated at the academy and also continue his education both on and off the field.

Calebs father, Carl Hunt, a committee member at Napier Marist football and board member at Hawke’s Bay United, said he always knew his son had the talent to make it.  “We knew if he pushed himself to keep learning with the right attitude and…the right coaching, he would go a long way in the game.  This opportunity with Ole doesn’t happen often so it is up to him to see what his future holds.  But he will be in the right environment and will certainly have the coaches to help him succeed in his football career.”

“I hope to learn more about the game and push myself to improve as a player and I’m excited to be able to learn from top coaches at the academy and looking forward to living in the residence with the other boys,” Caleb added.

—————————

Napier Marist members certainly wish Caleb every success with this great opportunity in the sport that he loves and will be following his progress with interest.

The Leprauchan Comments

Paddy was filling out a job application. When he came to the question, “Have you ever been arrested?” he wrote, “No.”
The next question was intended for people who had answered in the affirmative to the previous question, was “Why?”
Paddy answered it anyway: “Never got caught.”

Ryan Air in Ireland recently introduced a special half-fare rate for wives accompanying their husbands on business trips.  Anticipating some valuable testimonials, the publicity department of the airline sent out letters to all the wives of businessmen who used the special rates, asking how they enjoyed their trip.
Responses are still pouring in asking, “What trip?”

The Doctor was puzzled, “I’m sorry but I can’t diagnose yer trouble, Mahoney. I think it must be the drink.”
“Don’t worry about it Doc Kelly, I’ll come back when you’re sober.”

A Mexican, an Italian and our Irishman, Paddy, were doing construction work upon scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch when the Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, “Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time for lunch I’m going to jump off this building.”
The Italian opened his lunch box and said, “Pasta again! If I get pasta one more time, I’m jumping too.”
And Paddy said, “Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time, I’m going to jump off with you.”
Well – The next day, the Mexican opened his lunch box, saw a burrito; and jumped to his death. The Italian opened his lunch box, saw the pasta, and jumped to his death too.
Paddy, opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage, and also jumped to his death.
At their funerals the Mexican’s wife wept and said, “I could have given him tacos, or enchiladas! I didn’t realize he hated burritos so much.”
The Italian’s wife cried, “If I had only known how tired of pasta he was, I would have given him meatballs”.
Irishman’s wife said, “Don’t look at me. Paddy packed his own lunches.”

We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  –  Pop in for cool Tui or two  – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.    All members and Friends Welcome …………. Ed
