Game 2 in our pre-season programme played Lincoln Park, Ashurst saw the wider Premier squad record a comfortable 42-17 win over our Manawatu affiliates.
After a three-hour bus trip to Ashurst the boys seemed to be a bit sleepy but with the usual banter the team gave each other set us up for an interesting day ahead.
The ground was all set up for when we arrived and the Palmerston Marist team looked fairly large compared to the boys from the Bay. The ground itself was not as lush in the grass department compared to Tremain Field but it did promise for a fast pace tempo.
However, kickoff time arrived and the boys quickly got down to business. After the initial feeling out period the Napier forward pack quickly started to get dominance with some good front football which set up the rock stars to their usual amount of razzle dazzle.
Tries started to come with a regular occurrence as the Green Machine started to find its stride. The fitness levels of the boys were fantastic and was the clear difference in the sides. The players that stood out for this mans old crusty eyes were the combination of 2nd five Pedro and centre Saia Paese, they were very strong on defence and had some lovely soft hands that set up a lot of our outside backs tries.
The forwards worked well together and gained dominance early in the game. Coach Craig had the right amount of youth mixed with the experience of some of the vets to show dominances in most facets of play.
And he will be happy that we came through the game with a full squad of fit men. However, there are players putting their hand up all over the place which will leave the green machine coaching staff some real headaches when it comes to finalising their first up squad which is a fantastic position to be in.

THAT the following is a an overview into the –
History of the Spillane Tournament
To many sporting enthusiasts the Spillane tournament is just another series of rugby matches played originally at Easter at a changing venue. But to many players and supporters this weekend means a lot more than that. The playing of games in a friendly rivalry is arranged with the view of renewing old friendships and creating many new ones.
The majority of players in this tournament have, while attending primary and secondary schools learnt the fundamentals of rugby from those ardent coaches, the Marist Brothers. Besides their academic and religious teaching of pupils, the Marist Brothers have voluntarily found time to encourage and coach the game of rugby, as they have always readily recognized the value of such a game in the character building of boys. Therefore a great debt of gratitude is owed to those men who have so freely given of their best for this grand game of ours. Many of our members have been taught by other Catholic teaching fraternities and those people must also be included within our thanks.
Over the 88 years of its existence, the Spillane tournament has contributed much, to many it has been the launching pad to success, to others it has been the birthplace of wonderful times, never to be forgotten.
In 1926 two senior Marist clubs, Wanganui and Wellington, competed for a trophy known as the Marist Cup and although it still bears that name, it is the self same trophy that is played for today under the accepted title of Spillane Cup.
When in 1930 that keen Wanganui sportsman, Mr C I Spillane, donated the Spillane Cup for annual competition between the Wellington and Wanganui Marist Old Boys teams, little did he realize that his generous action was to prove the first move in the formation of the firmly established NZ Marist Rugby Football Association (now Federation) with its ideals of fostering goodwill.
From 1926 to 1929 the cup was competed for annually between Wanganui and Wellington. In 1930, having learnt that such a trophy existed, the Hamilton Marist Club issued a challenge to Wellington, the then holders. This challenge resulted in a conference being called with a view of some permanent competition being established. From this conference came the “New Zealand Marist Rugby Football Association” and the inauguration of what is now known as the Spillane tournament. Messers Howard Bowman and C J (Gus) Davies, both of Wellington, were elected the first president and secretary/treasurer respectively, positions they held for many years. August 24 1930, was the conference date, those attending that history making meeting in Wellington were: Auckland (S. Hadley, J Gourley); Wellington (H Bowman, C J Davies); Hamilton (Rev. Brother Clemens, P Kelly); Wanganui (J D Crowley, G Bridges). Napier Marist and Hastings Celtic were invited to the conference but were unable to send delegates.
The first tournament was allocated to Hamilton in 1931. In spite of the country being in the depths of the depression, three visiting teams, Wellington, Wanganui and Auckland joined Hamilton in the contest for the cup. After beating Hamilton 8 – 6 on the Saturday, Auckland headed off Wellington 11-3 in the final. (Napier Marist’s first tournament was in 1932 and our now Napier Old Boys Marist club has only missed one tournament since our first in 1932)
A copy of the minutes of the first meeting of the recently constituted NZ Marist Rugby Football Association, read, “the ideals of the Association are to bring Catholic football clubs in closer touch with one another for the interchange of players, conformity of club rules, discussion on the Spillane Cup competition and any other matters relevant to the betterment of clubs concerned.”
The annual Rugby tournament is the major feature of the Association’s activities. The tournament is now divided into two sections “A” section competing for the Spillane Cup and “B” section the Ham Cumming Cup; the winners of the second section qualify to compete for the major trophy the following season, when the losing “A” section team goes back to the “B” section. In the past, when numbers permitted, there were also “C”, “D” & “E” Sections, being for the Moran, Brennan & Liston Cups, but unfortunately due to poor commitment by some federated clubs, these are now rarely played for, except for by some Colts and Golden Oldies teams. At least this gives some players the opportunity to reap the rewards that the weekend offers. The Association has done invaluable work in the cause of Rugby Union among the Marist Clubs of the North Island and in providing this Annual Tournament has supplied the sporting public with an Easter event of the greatest interest.
First appearances of some of the other clubs at the tournament were: Napier Marist 1932, Gisborne Celtic 1933, Gisborne Marist and St Patrick’s – now Marist Palmerston North 1935, Hastings Celtic 1936, St Michael’s Rotorua 1951, New Plymouth and Masterton Marist 1952, Hutt Valley Marist 1953, St Patrick’s Te Awamutu 1955. Clubs such as Putararu Marist, Morrisville St Joseph’s, Whakatane St Joseph’s, Wairoa Celtic, Turangi Marist, Counties Marist and Wairakei Marist had also joined the fold by the mid 1980’s, making this annual tournament of affiliated club surely the biggest of its kind in the rugby world.
We must not let this last bastion of Marist rugby camaraderie and tradition be lost. Pressure must be put to bear on clubs to let their players have this opportunity and also on the unions to release clubs for this weekend. Thousands have given there all so that you may also reap the rewards and benefits of joining together in a great weekend of what club rugby and Marist rugby is all about.

THAT changes at the top of Hawkes Bay Rugby at last Tuesday evenings AGM saw NOB Marist men on the move. The outgoing Director of Finance over the past two years and a former NOBM Director of Finance and chairman Mike Smith has stepped down from the union role to take the position as manager of the 2019 Magpies team. Mike is taking over from our own current club chairman Terry Gittings who has relinquished the team management role that he has held for the past three representative seasons.
Mike’s replacement as the unions Finance Director is our club director of finance Craig Riddiford, and staying put and now in his 16th year on the Hawkes Bay executive and of which he has been chairman since 2011 is Brendan Mahony who is a former Marist premier player.
THAT an advance notice to all former Napier Highs School Old Boys rugby players – mark Saturday 18 May on your calendar and diary – The Club is holding a get-together for you which will tie in with our WIT Trust Premier team’s home game against old rivals Taradale (kick-off 3pm). The curtainraiser will be the clubs Premier Development XV vs Taradale at 1.15pm.

THAT one wonders just what the North Harbour Rugby Union are thinking about or more likely been talked into with their latest announcement of banning all representative rugby for under 14’s this season. Removing representative age group rugby for enthusiastic youngsters must certainly be a backward step. Could you just imagine the uproar if the HB Rugby banned any more Ross Shield tournaments!!!
It is obvious that some PC sandal wearing exponent has got their way and convinced the unions decision makers that these young players shouldn’t be exposed to the pressure of wanting to play hard and fair to win games like so many generations have done in the past…. maybe a few hop scotch competitions would be more in keeping for the future generations !

THAT it was great to see that a couple of our former NOBM players donated items for the Auction at last Fridays evenings St Johns College Rugby Foundation Race Night Fundraising Event. From France Joseph Penitito has donated a Biarritz team playing jersey and from Wellington Richard Gilhooly is providing stand tickets and pre-match hospitality for four to the All Blacks v South Africa test at Westpac Stadium.
This is a fundraising evening was run to help raise money towards two St Johns College rugby teams travelling to Chile in April 2019 (the 1st XV and Emerging Players sides) as well as towards the continued development of SJC rugby.
THAT the latest announcement from World Rugby with regards a 12 team global World League has certainly caused a ruckus especially with no Pacific nations teams in the proposed 12 team mix. And while Fiji is ranked on the IRB list as 9th, their place in the 12 has been given to the 13th ranked USA ! Fair play I reckon not, like anything in life you have to earn your spurs, I don’t think we have heard the end of this yet. Watch this space !
I reckon they have opened a can of worms without consultation with the players for a start, many have already indicated that they’ll be getting too much rugby and not enough time to recover. Also just imagine the stink those pro clubs in the UK and France will be kicking up at not having their contracted players available as many players find it a struggle now to work for two bosses. And to cap it all off they want to make it a closed shop for other teams for twelve years !!!
The instigators of this proposal have certainly bastardised the traditional name of the game rugby union by naming it the World ‘Rugby League’.

We even had our own portable stand courtesy of Bill Halpin and Red Steel that we also used to watch games and which even went down to the Central Hawkes Bay races on one occasion. Where is it now ? Well it is believed the Taradale Club might know something about it !

Having visited all the animals in the Zoo, and Irishman spent and extra half and hour looking for the Exit, but finally decided that it must have escaped……

Murphy applied for a fermentation operator post at a famous Irish firm based in Dublin. An American applied for the same job and since both applicants had similar qualifications, they were asked to take a test by the Manager. When the results were in, amazingly, both men had only one wrong answer.
The manager went to Murphy and said, ‘Thank you for coming to the interview, but We’ve decided to give the American the job.’
Murphy, ‘And why would you be doing that? We both got 19 questions correct. This being Ireland and me being Irish surely I should get the job.’
Manager, ‘We have made our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed.’
Murphy, ‘And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?’
Manager, ‘Simple. On question number 7 the American wrote down, ‘I don’t know.’
You put down, ‘Neither do I.’

An Irishman went to a psychiatrist to get help for his wife.
“She’s got a morbid fear of having her clothes stolen,”Doc”, he said to the psychiatrist.
“Only two days ago I went home early and found she had hired a fellow to stay in the wardrobe and guard them…”

Paddy was a country boy, he had never been to Dublin. One day he decided to walk into Wexford and catch the bus to Dublin.
Duly the bus arrived and Paddy asked the conductor for a return ticket. ‘A return to where?’ asked the conductor’.
‘Why back here of course’ said Paddy.
