Spillane Final
Napier Old Boys Marist claimed the annual NZ Marist preseason tournament title with two strong wins built on tempo, accuracy and superior fitness.  They backed up a high scoring opener against Hamilton Marist with a composed effort over Hastings Rugby and  Sports to finish unbeaten.

Game One – vs Hamilton Marist   43-24
Napier Old Boys Marist started their campaign in style, running in a stack of points to win 43-24 over Hamilton Marist.  Their forwards laid a solid platform, giving the backs clean ball and allowing them to play with width and speed..
Key features of the match   * High tempo on attack, stretching Hamilton Marist to both sidelines.     Dominant periods at set piece and breakdown, generating quick ruck ball.  *  Clinical finishing in the red zone, turning pressure into tries rather than penalties.

Game Two – vs Hastings Rugby and Sports   34-24
In the decider, Napier Old Boys Marist backed up superbly to secure a 3424 win over Hastings Rugby and Sports.  Hastings brought more physicality and breakdown pressure, but NOBM’s composure and structure proved the difference.
Key features of the match  *  Improved defensive line speed to limit Hastings’ gain-line success.   *  Smart exit play and kicking, pinning Hastings to their own half at key moments.    Impact off the bench, with fresh legs helping to close out the final quarter.

A vital moment came midway through the second half when NOBM defended multiple phases inside their 22, forced a turnover, and then went the length of the field for a try that swung momentum firmly their way.

Tournament Wrap  –  Statement Start to 2026
Across the two games Napier Old Boys Marist piled on 77 points while conceding 48, underlining both their attacking threat and the work-on tightening defence before the regular season.  Winning both fixtures and lifting the tournament trophy sends a clear early message to local and Marist opposition.
Key takeaways:   *  Attack already looks sharp, with combinations clicking early in the year.   *  Set piece and breakdown work provided a reliable platform across both matches.
*  Depth in the squad showed, with group backing up physically and mentally over twp tough games to finish champions.

Bernie McCahill Cup  –  Colts
Napier OBM  52 – 50 Hastings R&S

The victors and the vanquished.  In an especially high scoring Spillane Colts encounter NOB Marist ‘narrowly’ came out
on top against their Hastings R&S counterparts  52 – 50.  In doing so they earned themselves the Bernie McCahill Cup.

The 2026 season is fast approaching, and our Colts team was recently asked if we were interested in playing in the Spillane Tournament for the Bernie McCahill Cup. We jumped at the opportunity and got straight into preparation.    With Tuesday and Thursday night trainings underway, it was awesome to see over 20 boys at each session — a great turnout for this time of year and a sign of the commitment building in the squad.

Saturday 7th of March finally arrived, and the weather was perfect for running rugby. We started strongly, scoring within the first few minutes. However, the big HRS side fought back and took the lead 19–7 midway through the first half. After making a few changes, the boys responded brilliantly and went into halftime with a 34–24 lead.   The second half was just as intense, with both teams going try for try. In the end, the boys dug deep and held on for a thrilling 52–50 victory, bringing home the Bernie McCahill Cup.

The 2026 Colts squad is looking strong, with several boys returning for their third and fourth seasons alongside some exciting new players joining the team. It’s shaping up to be a great year, and we’re looking forward to the season ahead and making the club proud.

DID  YOU  KNOW

THAT we extend our Thanks to tournament hosts Hastings Rugby & Sports for running a professionally conducted 94th Spillane Tournament over the past weekend.  And despite a somewhat poor showing from of number affiliate clubs who hadn’t made the effort to get their act together and participate,  it still added up to another great weekend of Marist fellowship  and  Rugby.

THAT  it’s great to see that our NOB Marist Colts participated in the 2026 Spillane tournament.  Playing the Colts section they got a sniff of what the Spillane Tournament is all about.

 THAT heres a  FLASHBACK  –  2002  Remember ?   –  Maddison Trophy Final   –   August 4   2002

From the 2002 Maddison Trophy Final and the comparison of scoring stats which should bring back a few memories for both players and supporters.
Looking back at some interesting data NOB Marist won 24-11.  Taradale led 11-7 at halftime. NOB Marist keeping Taradale scoreless in the second half and packed on points.
Scorers for NOB Marist were:  Tries: – Herman Ah Kiong, Jason Bright, Bevan Pickett, Donovan Hall.    Conversions: – Marius Kriel (2).

NOBM Leading scorers  2002
Bevan Picket   139      Michael Johnson  65     Tries:  Michael Johnson  13   Hermon Ah Kiong  10   Ben Trew     9   Clint Chamberlain  8
Team Tries  86           Points  For  598       Against  177

Vs

Taradale Leading scorers  2002
Ryan Lewis  139    Michael Chaffey  61   Tries: Michael Chaffey 10   Willie Faletutulu  9   Jovesa Naivalu  8   Ryan Lewis  6
Team Tries  82           Points  For  579          Against  346

And for those of you who can recall those times, the Napier Old Boys Marist lineup for the 2002 Maddison Final:   15. Glyn Smith  14.  Hermon Ah Kiong   13. Ben Trew   12. Bevan Pickett   11. Clint Chamberlain   10. Marius Kriel   9.Donovan Hall  .8. Glen Varcoe   7. Earl Anderson   6. Michael Johnson   5. David Byrne   4. Alan Gardiner   3. Taane Lee  2. Howard Murray (captain)   1. Ian Baty.    Bench:  16. Johnny Galo.  17. Johno Williams  18. Nigel Halpin  19. Jason Rhodes  20. Adam Jerram   21. Scott Taylor  22. Jason Bright  23. Steve Harrison  24. Manu Petera

2002  Maddison Trophy Semi Finals:  Taradale 22 – 13 Havelock North    :    NOB Marist 22 – 6 Pirates.
And it had been so close.  In the Maddison round three weeks earlier –  * NOB Marist narrowly accounted for Taradale with their 24 – 23  winning result !

THAT  A Coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a LIFETIME

THATwe are expecting a visit from a member of the Perth based Joondalup Brothers Rugby Club, Russell Peart, who is making the trip across the ditch for the Hurricanes v Western Force match which was played at McLean Park on Friday evening.  His club founded in 1998, is one of a number of affiliate Brothers  rugby clubs throughout Australia who are all on our TeamTalk mailing list.    He made contact with me and indicated that he would like get along to one of practice sessions visit our club and maybe sample a drop of Ale while he was in town.  I was sure we would  extend a warm welcome to a good Brothers rugby man.    Ed.

THAT   re  WE’RE LOOKING FOR MATCHDAY VOLUNTEERS    A suggestion to members  these roles do not necessarily have to done by one person, maybe these important positions could be shared between two or three  club members  –  sort of  ‘share the load’.    Give this some serious through guys and girls  >>> YOUR SUPPORT WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED.  Contact Wade if YOU or you know of someone who may be interested in taking on one of these important roles.  Your Support will really be Appreciated.

“Change the game, don’t let the game change you.”

HERE and THERE . . .

Celebrating 30 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . .

WE HAD TO. . . smile on Wednesday morning after seeing comments under the Napier Old Boys Marist Facebook post about Saturday’s Spillane fixtures.   Club stalwart Tony O’Connor asked, “When will the draw be posted?” and Krutter simply replied, “This is it mate.”

T’WAS . . . 50 years ago this year I moved from the Lily Whites to the Doolins, joining the Marist Under 21 Gold team coached by Dave Roberts.   The top Green side was coached by Chris Downing and Kevin Plowman. Matches against Green were always challenging, and I still have team stats from that time.   In 1976, I gained the nickname McGoo at the club, adapted from “little Magoo,” a name I’d picked up at Napier High School Old Boys after my dad dressed as Mr Magoo for a fancy dress night.

IMAGINE . . . running a mile while drinking four beers along the way. Canadian athlete Corey Bellemere currently holds the men’s beer mile world record with a time of 4:27.10, achieved at the 2025 Beer Mile World Classic in Lisbon.   The women’s record belongs to Shelby Houlihan, who finished in 5:43.81 in 2023.   The rules are simple: participants must drink four 12oz (5%) beers and run four 400m laps, receiving penalty laps if they vomit. However, this event is not officially recognized by World Athletics.

DURING . . . my recent visit to Perth, I saw a digital advertising sign at a traffic intersection in Myaree displaying a real estate advert: “Antony Doolin – Doolin it Right.”   It is funny that this intersection also features Mel Maria, a Catholic school, on one of its corners, which adds an element of irony to the ads placement.

WITH THE . . . Melbourne F1 grand prix on this weekend I thought I’d make a rare comment about the sport.   It’s a sport I can take or leave, so I think I’ll just leave it.

THAT’S A WRAP. . . Next week Rugby World Cup ticketing.

 Cheers McGoo – mcgooz@outlook.com

A little combative action from OBM’s  Oto Katoa  in the Spillane Final.

THEY SAID IT

“The review concluded the Tupou Vaa’i’s action constituted leaving the ground to avoid a tackle,  rather than simply diving forward to score a try, and that as a result the try should not have been awarded.”
Super Rugby Pacific referee Ben O’Keefe got it wrong after the Chiefs beat the Blues by four points.

“”Everyone will be aware that we’re at that crucial mid-period in the four year World Cup cycle.  Two years in and so I’m sure unsurprising for everyone, the New Zealand Rugby Board and management have taken a very comprehensive review.”

NZR chairman David Kirk.

“The All Blacks are not on track in the way that we need them for the 2027 World Cup.  And indeed for what will be a very demanding year in 2026 with four matches against South Africa in rugbys greatest rivalry.”

David Kirk continues.

WEEKEND SENIOR RESULTS:
Courtesy Scott Morgan

Premiers:
The Station NOBM Premiers lost to Taradale by 113 runs.
We won the toss and elected to bowl first, starting economically to have Taradale at 2/31 after 12 overs. Middle to late order partnerships allowed Taradale to score 237/9 from their 50 overs. Best of the bowlers were Mitchell Innes with 3/44 from 10 overs and Pritpal Singh with an economical 2/21 from 10 overs.
In response, we started solidly but regular wickets throughout the innings resulted in us scoring 124 all out in 32.1 overs. Best of the batters was Josh Paerau with 41 from 43 balls.

Division 2a:
The NOBM Eagles beat Hawkes Bay United Kings by 8 wickets.
We bowled first, with the Kings scoring 174 all out in 38.3 overs. Best of the bowlers were Sarwan Singh with 4/39 from 8 overs and Jagraj Singh Ghuman with 2/31 from 6 overs.
In response, Harry Gill (93 from 69 balls) and Faraz Rana (43 from 47) put on 104 for the first wicket and we ended up winning by 8 wickets in just 22.5 overs.

Division 2b:
The Sideline Bar NOBM Hobblers beat Marewa by 23 runs.
We won the toss and chose to bat. After an early wicket, Max Healy (93 from 79 balls) put on 75 with Calim Leathard (23 from 41) and 73 with John O’Brien (46 from 41). This put us into a good position and late hitting from Rattendeep Singh (30 from 18) and Jason Sayer (25 from 15) got us to 261/9 from 40 overs.
In response. Marewa started strongly and it took crucial wickets in the 13th and 15th overs to stem the flow of runs and bring us back into it. As time went on the required run rate grew along with regular wickets and Marewa needed 33 from the last over, from which they scored 9. Best of the bowlers was Cameron Todd with 2/31 from 6 overs, while Scott Morgan picked up the 2 wickets at the top.

Division 3:
The Downey’s Butchery Proton Electrical NOBM Sausages beat NBHS by 7 wickets. The following match report is from one of the players:
The Mighty Downey’s butchery Proton electric NOBM sausages played NBHS 3rd 11 today.
Losing the toss we bowled 1st, Varun Vinayak and Daniel Wallace bowled great at the start followed by the other bowlers all bowling tightly restricting NBHS to 147. Pick of the bowlers with Varun Vinayak 3 for 15 off 6 overs with Daniel Wallace and Alister Poulgrain both picking up 2 wickets each.
Chasing 147 to win Jason Mohi and Michael Atkinson made it an easy task with an opening stand of 86 (Jason Mohi 42 off 38 and Michael Atkinson 49 off 64). Boys have a couple of big games coming up in the next 2 weeks to seal a finals spot… Up The Mighty Sausages…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THEY SAID IT
“What we’ve done a lot of, is we’ve played 60%  of the game really well and we’ve let that last 40% slide.”
New NOBMCC Marist captain Charlie Caslake.
“So, over the last few weeks, we’ve talked about knowing the other side will have a partnership and knowing we might lose a few quick wickets but we also know we’re good enough to win games in this division and , if we keep going and keep our heads up and keep fighting, we’re good enough to win games over 100 overs.  Two more wins and we’re in the finals
.”
Charlie Caslake.
