Why would you play for Old Boys Marist ?
We have a simple philosophy at Napier Old Boys Marist – that we are a well organised rugby club both on and off the field, we are fit, disciplined, well coached and our players are very loyal. Our teams are always well presented.
At Napier Old Boys Marist we promote a strong work ethic, we play with a special passion and honesty which is fun to be part of, but we also expect our players to carry that honesty through to their work and personal lives.
In summary we as a club will create a positive environment so that players can expect to progress in their rugby careers. To excel players must also take responsibility for their rugby and life in general.

Running a little late this edition due to an influx of family including our four daughters, partners and grand-children who arrived over from Melbourne and Sydney in recent days. They were here as well as many other friends to join us out at Craggy Range Winery to celebratory Dinner for Margaret and my 60th Wedding Anniversary. Something of a milestone in our married life which certainly made for a joyous occasion. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have extended best wishes to us it has been certainly much appreciated. “There are good ships and there are wood ships…
….But the best ships are friendships.”
HERE and THERE . . .
Celebrating 30 years of News, Views, Opinion and Stats from the man in the stand . . . .
IT WAS . . . great to see international netball back at the Pettigrew Green on Wednesday night for the first time since 2017 when the Silver Ferns took on the South African Proteas. The atmosphere was amazing to be part of. It was great to see the region embrace the occasion whole heartedly. Still my opinion is that while the Silver Ferns will win this series 3-0 all it’s doing is glossing over the cracks that have appeared in the Netball NZ façade with it’s handling of the suspension of coach Dame Noelene Taurua. Once the saviour of the Silver Ferns is now being crucified by her employer for somethings that happened way back in January. There’s so much more I could say, but I’ll leave it at that for now.
WITH . . . 7 points (2 conversions and a penalty) scored for the King Country Rams in their 17-32 away loss last week against Mid Canterbury, the Green Machine’s Pat Hedley has reached a total of 74 points in the first five Bunnings Heartland games of 2025. To date, he has accumulated 233 points across 17 games for the Rams.
THE REST OF THE . . . King Country Rams 1990s inspired vintage charity jerseys raised a further $1666.00 when put up on Trade Me during the week. The initial on the day auction raised about $10,550 for the NZ Rugby Foundation.
THIS . . . seasons charity jerseys to raise funds for the Acorn Foundation took place on Thursday and Friday following the Hawke’s Bay Magpies impressive 45-28 win over the Rangitoto Yanks. And #22 of Ripley’s, believe it or not was won by yours truly. That gives me five (all signed) of the six charity auction jerseys in my collection to date. Top price was $705.00 for Lincoln McClutchie’s #10 shirt (28 bids) next was Sam Smith’s #7 (37 bids) for $600.00 and third highest was Devan Flanders #8 for $460.00 (20 bids). In the overall auction for the 23-match worn jersey there were 209 bids and the average price paid was $344.00.
GREG . . . Louganis, a former Olympic diving champion who is 65 years old, is relocating to Panama after selling his California home and a few of his possessions. During his career between 1976 and 1988, Louganis won four gold medals and one silver medal. He recently sold three of his Olympic medals at an auction for over $400,000 in July. The 1984 Los Angeles gold medal was sold for $199,301, and the gold medal from the 1988 Seoul Olympics was sold for $201,314. In Seoul, Louganis became the first man to win all the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games.
WITH . . . one round robin game remaining — an away fixture against the Turbos in Palmy next Saturday — the following are the current scoring statistics for the Hawke’s Bay Magpies: The team has scored 40 tries, with 25 attributed to the backs. They have successfully completed 32 conversions, 4 penalties, and notably, Lincoln McClutchie secured a golden point drop goal against the Steamers. The leading points scorers are Harry Godfrey with 53 and Lincoln McClutchie with 35. The top try scorers are Lukas Ripley (5) and Miracle Fai’alagi (4). Over the course of nine matches, opposition teams have accumulated 27 tries, 24 conversions, and 4 penalty goals.
NEXT WEEK . . . some netball from Perth.
Cheers McGoo

THAT it was interesting to see youngsters accompanying both the All Blacks and the Wallabies players out onto the field in last nights 2nd test match in Perth. A nice touch by the West Australian rugby union in promotion of the game through the singing of the national anthems.

The Leprauchan Comments
A young man, Fergus O’Hara, was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. “Pardon me,” she said with misty eyes, “I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It’s just that you look just like my son, who has since passed on. You two would have been about the same age.”
“That’s a shame,” replied Fergus, “is there anything I can do for you?”
“Yes,” she said, “as I’m leaving, can you say ‘Good bye, Mother!’ It would make me feel so much better.”
“Sure,” answered Fergus. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, “Good bye, Mother!”
As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. “How can that be?” he asked, “I only purchased a few things!”
“Your mother said that you would take care of her bill,” said the clerk.
A wealthy couple from Texas were touring Ireland and found themselves in a tiny rural village at lunchtime. The only place serving food was a somewhat rustic looking cafe which in their opinion, had seen better days. Having no other choice, they carefully stepped over the pooch snoozing on the threshold and went inside. As they sat down, the husband frowned as he brushed some crumbs from his chair and his wife did likewise as she wiped the table with her napkin.
The waitress came over and asked if they would like to see a menu. “No thanks,” said the husband. “I’ll just have a cup of tea with cream and sugar.
“I’ll have the same”, his wife said. “And please make sure the cup is clean.”
Unphased by the rudeness of the remark, the waitress smiled and marched off into the kitchen. A few minutes later, she was back.”Two cups of tea,” she announced in her lovely lilting Irish brogue…”And which one of you was it who wanted the clean cup?”
Paddy was in New York He was patiently waiting, and watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted, “Okay pedestrians”. Then he’d allow the traffic to pass. He’d done this several times, and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk.
After the cop had shouted “Pedestrians” for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, “Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?”
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday – Pop in for cool Tui or two – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat. All members and friends Welcome …………. Ed
