DID YOU KNOW
THAT it is with anticipation we await the Hawkes Bay Magpies first defence of the Ranfurly Shield on Friday evening against Northland. And while the hammering that the ‘team’ received at Albany last Sunday at the hands of North Harbour was certainly a disappointing result there is only one way to get back on the horse and that is to put a winning result on the scoreboard to make amends. There is one thing that’s sure is that by the time this is read we will know the outcome of the encounter and will be looking forward to the next defence against our former Central Vikings partners the Manawatu Turbos.
…….. THAT it was a highly elated Magpie skipper Ash Dixon following his 101st outing in the black n white strip on Friday evening on the McLean Park turf following his sides 33-17 win. The four try bonus point result and a home crowd there to acknowledge his ton certainly made for a happy night for Ash, who had earlier run out for the kickoff with his team and accompanied by his children where his feat was acknowledged by the students of Te Aute College performing a stirring haka in his honour.
THAT our roving cameraman Chris Kiely captured a couple of our club personalities pre match on Friday evening. Match official Pete ‘Bam’ Bainbridge chatting to Magpie Sam McNichol and scoreboard operator Paul ‘McGoo’ McGettigan taking a coffee break prior to the Magpies-Northland Shield challenge action commencing
THAT Magpie import Stacey Ili heads out onto the field for the Northland shield challenge on Friday evening in front of a big crowd at McLean Park. Stacey an experienced and talented midfield back who played for our NOBM Premiers for part of the season in 2019, certainly lived up to his reputation and turned in a top game in the Magpies 33-17 win over Northland.
THAT the Wallabies new mentor Dave Rennie has already given his charges belief in themselves if that last eight minutes of extra time is anything to go by. It was worth more than the full 80 minutes and was an awesome display of sustained attack versus stubborn and determined defence from both sides. It would have been a fairytale ending for the Aussies if that long range penalty of Reece Hodges had been a smidgeon more to the left and it would have been game, set and match.
At this stage pre-game how both sides will prepare to get a result going their way this time certainly makes for an intriguing encounter to come and one can only imagine just how the two opposing new head coaches will be sleeping at night as they endeavour to plot a winning result for their charges.
THAT it’s getting to be around that time for our Summer of Sevens to kickoff with the annual NOBM Invitational 7’s Tournament to held at Tremain Field on Saturday 21 November. More details to be announced shortly.
THAT and another old Irish proverb – May misfortune follow you the rest of your life, and never catch up.
HAS THE . . . Ranfurly Shield Tiki Tour of NZ come to an end for 2020? Maybe it has? With their win on Friday night over the Northland Taniwha the Hawke’s Bay Magpies have now become the first side this season to successfully defend the Shield after winning it.
THIS . . . week yours truly was first in line at Stirling Sports Napier to order one of the limited edition (200) Magpies Ranfurly Shield winning jerseys. The price $120.00. After all as I quite often say one can never have too many tops!
THIS . . . year’s reduced Moto GP championship has so far produced seven different winners from nine races. The absence of defending champion Marc Marquez due to injury in round two has certainly thrown quest for the 2020 Moto GP crown wide open. Any one of about five riders could still win it with five more rounds to go. It’s certainly more of a contest than the Hamilton procession we see in F1 at the moment.
COULDN’T . . . help but notice that the program for Friday’s defence had no reference to the fact it was a Ranfurly Shield challenge match. As one who had a hand for 10 years in producing high quality HBRU club and rep programs I find this a tad disappointing. Just the Ranfurly Shield on the front cover would be sufficient.
WHEN . . . comes to average Ranfurly Shield tenures per times won the Hawke’s Bay Magpies come out on top with an average tenure of 11.2 %. This comes from 6 times won and now 57 successful defences. Overall Ranfurly Shield defence success sees the Magpies sitting in fourth place behind Auckland 148, Canterbury 139 and Waikato 60. Auckland has won it just a mere 16 times!
THIS WEEKEND . . . the World Half Marathon Champs are being held in Poland. Up to 250 athletes vying for the $US30,000 for first place in the mens and womens events. There’s also an additional $US50,000 up for grabs for whoever breaks a world record.
AND NOW . . . a something from the useless information file. Did you know The Beatles and The Rolling Stones only ever recorded and released two songs the same? The Berry Gordon song “Money That’s What I Want” and Lennon/McCartney’s composition “I Wanna Be Your Man”.
Cheers McGoo
THAT Make Sure YOU are at McLean Park at 4.35pm this coming Saturday – 24 October – to SUPPORT our Hawkes Bay Magpies in their next Shield defence when they take on the Manawatu Turbos – kickoff 4.35pm.
++++ It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
THEY SAID IT
“Is it time for a statement? Yes it is.”
All Blacks coach Ian Foster states the obvious leading into Bledisloe 2.
“At the end of the day with a draw it’s bitterly disappointing from an All Blacks side but it’s a start and we’ve got a pretty good marker of where we’re at right now.”
Ian Foster sums up the drawn result.
“That’s why they call them test matches because you’ve got to take those little moments and when you get a bit sloppy in those moments it can come back and bite you.”
Ian Foster.
“The last ten minutes is championship time”.
George Gregan’s famous mantra during his glorious rugby days.
“They bossed the breakdown, we were on holiday.”
Hooker Dane Coles Bledisloe draw.
“All year we’ve been told that we can’t compete and we don’t have the player strength, so a 16 all draw was wondrously ironic.”
ARU chairman Hamish McLennan.

The Leprauchan Comments
While Paddy and Murphy are in Iraq, Murphy accidently steps on a land mine.
After a big explosion Murphy was left on the ground screaming, “Paddy, Paddy, help me I’ve lost my legs.”
Paddy looks around and says, “You lying fool…..they’re over there.”
Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died.
He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. “Did you see the paper?” asked Gallagher, “They say I died!!”
“Yes, I saw it!” replied Finney, “Where are ye callin’ from?”
Paddy and his wife were lying in bed in their house in Dublin one Saturday morning. It was 8 o’clock and the neighbour’s dog was going mental with his continually barking.
‘Damn this’, shouted Paddy as he ran out of the room.
He arrived back up the stairs ten minutes later. ‘What are you after doing?’ replied his wife.
‘I’ve put the little b*stard in our garden. Let’s see how they like listening to the little b*stard!’
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday – Pop in for cool Tui or two – Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat. All members and Friends Welcome …………. Ed
